  • FHP, application process time?

How long did it take you to get accepted and begin the academy for the Highway Patrol?

I want to apply at X amount of time before I get my AS degree, so that by the time I get my AS Degree, I will already be accepted and can go attend academy

    Long Long Long Long, TIME!!!!

FHP takes a very long time to process all willing to join. Be ready to be EXTREMELY PATIENT, MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER ANOTHER AGENCY, MORAL VERY BAD, PAY IS WORST IN STATE, GOOD LUCK GROWING YOUR BEARD, YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF TIME. THE NEXT ACADEMY IS JAN 09, YOU WILL NOT EVER SEE THAT ONE, LOOK FOR NEXT JULY AT THE EARLIEST.

I'll weed out the information that you don't need:

FHP takes a very long time to process all willing to join.
I am looking into FHP recruitment as well, and sometimes money isn't the #1 reason people go into law enforcement.

        Also, just applied:

        From the application:

Selection Process - The FHP selection process takes four to eight months to complete. Steps in the selection process include 1. A completed State of Florida Employment Application; 2. Physical Abilities Test and Written Exam; 3. Polygraph Exam; 4. Psychological Exam; 5. Medical Exam; 6. Vision Exam and 7. Background Investigation.

I think it's rather odd that a state agency that seems to be having recruiment /pay/morale issues......would take such a long time to process people. It doesn't make much sense.......8 months to find out that you didn't make the cut...thats just unacceptable.

You will most likely find out before 8 months if you are out of the process. Most get bumped out at the poly or the psych. Poly is done few months into the process.

For all those wondering, here is the e-mail I got after applying:

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida’s Finest Law Enforcement agency. You've taken your first step to a promising and rewarding future!

We have received your application and are in the process of reviewing it. Approximately 6-8 weeks after we've reviewed your application, you will receive a letter informing you of your status.

If you have not received any correspondence from our office by the 8th week after you applied, please call or email me to make sure there were no problems with your application.

Shortly thereafter, you will receive a second letter inviting you to participate in the initial written examination and physical abilities test, as well as a 27-page supplemental application which must be completed and brought with you to testing.

The letter will include instructions and information on the location of the evaluations. The tests are generally conducted the third week of each month in Tallahassee, Miami and Orlando. If you’ve taken the CJBAT test for Law Enforcement Officers within the two years prior to the start of the academy date, you will not need to take it with us. Simply submit the results with your Supplemental Application when you bring it with you to testing.

Even If you have taken the PAT with another community college or law enforcement agency, you will still need to take it with the Highway Patrol. It is very important for you to show up on your assigned test date.

Prior military personnel: Please do not fax your DD214; we will ask you to bring it with you and include it in your paperwork when you report for your first testing phase

For military personnel who are currently on active duty, you will need to bring a letter from your commanding officer detailing your estimated transition date and your anticipated discharge status.

If you have any prior arrests, even as a juvenile, you will need to furnish our office with both a copy of the arrest report(s) and court disposition(s).

All official correspondences from our office will be via mail; you will not receive a phone call or email regarding your application status.

Please note that there are 4 key steps in our hiring process. The first is the CJBAT (written) exam and Physical Agilities Test (PAT). The second is the polygraph. The third is the psychological, physical and eye exam. Finally, the fourth entails the background investigation. It may take anywhere from 4 to 8 months to work your way through the entire process, but I assure you it is well worth the wait!

Once you’ve passed all of the steps, you will be considered for a position in an upcoming academy class. While you attend the Florida Highway Patrol Academy, you will earn a salary of $2,514 per month. After graduation, you’ll report to your duty station and begin field training, and receive a $300 per month pay increase.

You have chosen to embark on a career with the finest law enforcement agency in the State of Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol has a long and proud history which includes some of the most highly respected and recognized law enforcement officers in the United States. I wish you the best of luck on your performance and participation.

Your application will be processed for the next Basic Recruit Class. Again, the hiring process can take anywhere from 4 to 8 months, so this will allow plenty of time for you to work your way through the various phases.

If you are currently a Florida-certified law enforcement officer, please note the hiring process is no different from our basic recruit candidates. However, you will be eligible to attend an abbreviated transitional class, most likely to begin at the later portion of a current or upcoming academy class.

Having been through this process myself, I understand the excitement and anticipation you are no doubt experiencing.

                Sincerely,

                Sergeant Anthony Stone

What I'm wondering is, it says on the site that if I apply by the 26th of September, I would be in for the October testing. This e-mail clearly states that this isn't going to happen.

About 3 weeks before the October testing dates, you'll most likely receive a letter inviting you to attend the CJBAT/PAT testing - if you're considered eligible.

At that time, you'll also receive the 20+ page supplemental application and will be expected to have it prepared by the test date. Start running around now to get your required documents in order to save time.

I heard that because of budget cuts, there will only be one 2009 class. Don't hold me to it though.

According to the Colonel, there will be 2 classes in 2009.

I've finished everything and my BI has my file. He said it's going to be close getting me into the January class.
