  • California Officer visiting Orlando 1st time

    Greetings fellow law enforcement officers,

I am a San Francisco police officer and will be traveling to Orlando this Saturday with my fiancee. Just a few questions, still debating whether it's worth the hassle to bring my off duty weapon or not.

    1. Will I be able to bring my weapon into the theme parks?

    2. Is it a hassle to check in a firearm at Orlando airport?

How is the thunderstorms and hurricane affecting the theme parks? Have there been any major problems due to the Hurricane Fay? Experience any major delays at the airport? It's too late for me to change my plans. (non-refundable).

Last thing, any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks!

As far as the weather, it's been pretty rough. Lots and lots of rain and wind and it is supposed to keep it up all weekend (although as I type this it has stopped raining, hmm...). I was at the airport yesterday and there didn't seem to be any delays.

I flew out of the Orlando airport a couple of months ago. Checking in the firearm was easy. I don't think it took more than an extra three or four minutes. If you have never checked in a firearm let me know and I'll give you a few hints.

Ive been going to disney for ages now and I always pack my bug. Keep it under wraps, make sure it is properly concealed and secured and dont tell them you have it. If you carry in a belly bag....dont. They recognize those immediatly and check them. If you make it known that you are carrying they will politely ask you to either take it back to your vehicle, or check it in the lockers that they will escort you too. The mickey mouse police check bags but dont run metal detectors on anybody, this is precisly why I carry.

I dont want to disuade you from going to any of the theme parks. They are typically extraordinarily safe, however seeing 5 or 7 OCSD deputies chasing 15 hoodrats (very, very, like.... really unusual) thru the park with guns drawn is sobering. If you feel comfortable and desire to do so, I always prefer to have and not need, than need and not have.

Also, weapons check in is easy. Follow the FTA air transport guidelines to a "T" and be prepared for one bag checker to say to do it one way, and a different one say something else. I had one insist that my rounds be in a seperate locked container, and another one say keep the rounds in the same box as the gun. Be flexible and ready for no one to know what to do and it'll be fine.
Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.

I haven't ever seen OCSD chasing hoodlums out of the park. I guess that's a good thing.

Well I did mention that is was

              (very, very, like.... really unusual)
I only ever saw anything like it once. everything about it was unusual. You almost never see more than 2 of that sort of clientell in the parks together and usually they are with their girls so they keep it calm. I wouldnt be suprised to have found out that the whole lot of them bumrushed the park. Most of the time the worst thing you see is a bedragled mom yelling at a sugared up 9yr old.

I can tell that if you saw us chasing someone it may have been through pleasure island... but with guns drawn... i doubt it..... maybe a taser... anyways.. I wasnt discouraging you i was just saying I would not carry inside Disney... Disney Does not Politely ask you to take it to the car.. Disney escorts you and your family off disney property and says dont come back.. There have been a few times where Deputy's have been even asked to issue trespass warnings.. Disney Security thinks they are a PD... so be careful. If your not to comfortable with things when you get to the Main Gate Plaza Just ask to speak to a Deputy. There are always always deputys in Disney area.. Hence why it was made its own Sector. Just my .02 on that issue.
I may be short, fat and stupid...... But I can still taser you....

Disney World is actually a sector for the OCSD? I figured the deputies walking around Disney were making some money off duty.

Though Disney can remove anyone at any time as it is private property, that is not consistant with the information that I have been given. This includes that which has been confired to me by a OCSD deputy that works disney whom I happen to be tight with. Facts are that NO WHERE outside the theme parks that I have observed (And I looked) is it posted that ABSOLUTLY no weapons allowed. If its not posted, you cant expect those officers and others with CCW's to "know" its not allowed. Removing LEO's and their families without tact, for either a mistake of fact, or genuine desire to maintain their safety and security would be a major faux pas.

I understand the Disney Policies. First off we are OCSO Orange County Sheriffs Office... and While in past times I have worked Disney too. Disney does and continues to ban all firearms. There are several several postings upon the entry way to disney and also at the main gate banning firearms. Disney has before asked LEO's to leave. The "Reedy Creek Improvment District" is actually a city, therefore they pretty much can and do what they want. Im not here to get in an argument I was just giving my advice that I would not carry in the Park as Disney security has been less and less friendly lately (I Guess thats cause we keep arresting all there security officers who do dumb stuff off of disney time)

I keep hearing that. My buddy has told me that at least 4 occasions that he has had issues with dis security. From speeding to yes, overstepping their authority. And they must be getting stricter. I havent been there within the last 8 months but when i went I never saw any signage. Maybe I missed it or they added something.

I carry on the subtle side with my P3AT which I think makes a difference. If you walk in with your duty howitzer, 3 extra mags, and combat knife I can see how they might be a little nervous. Facts are that I have seen a couple arrestees on property.

There are arrests on disney property daily... though most are carried out in back areas.... If you carried small I dont forsee a problem.. just be warned.. and disney security are getting worse and worse... I had one block the road infront of my personal vehicle in downtown disney last week and then come and chastize me for not stopping quick enough... all that guy got was a look, a laugh and a few four letter words.... wonder what he will do when he sees me next weekend working off duty out there.

I carry my P3AT everywhere. Disney is the only place I would consider leaving it in the car. Correction, A Disney THEME PARK. I don't really want to test out my K&D holster versus Mr. Toad's Wild ride.

Doubly true at Universal where a lot of the roller coasters turn you upisde down.

I would absolutely carry to Downtown Disney, Pleasure Island and any such places. If you go to Downtown Orlando (and I recommend you don't) bring your gun. Then bring your other gun because shootings inside clubs, in parking lots/garages, and on city streets are NOT uncommon. Even with all the officers we have there.

As for the airport bring a manufactuers box with enough room to carry all the rounds you intend on having. Make sure you follow TSA rules and have all the locks for your gun case and luggage and so forth. This stuff is fairly standard.

The Airlines are pretty quirky and each time I've checked a gun it's been a little different. Usually you just declare it, fill out a small form, then turn your bag over to TSA. I personally identify myself as a police officer because sometimes firearms get airline people a little stressed and that seems to help a little.

One of the times I was flying the ticket agent got a little flustered by the firearm and had her supervisor come over. They reviewed their policy and had to see that the weapon was unloaded. They asked that I show them that the weapon was unloaded.

At the ticket counter. With a hundred people behind me.

"Just before I do this I want to make sure that I understand what you need me to do."

I had to show them there was no magazine in the weapon and that the chamber was empty. Here I am, taking the handgun out at the ticket counter and locking the slide back. I've never been asked to handle a firearm in a terminal like that before.
I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol.

"Why didn't you put that out on the radio?"
"I don't know Sarge, I guess I got caught up in the moment"
"The MOMENT is when we F--king need you!" - K-9 Sgt Myhre to unidentified Officer
