Working for a department with no funds, almost strickly grant driven. Stuck with a printer that blows through an ink cartridge every two weeks. Buying cartridges is killing our small budget. Anyone in CO have an old black and white laser printer they can spare? Just looking for something that is conservative on ink?

Go with a monochrome, duplex, network printer (ethernet port). Brother makes a line of HL printers for about $200. Toner carts are only a little more than ink carts and last many more pages. Monochrome is a fraction of the cost of color (per page) and duplexing will help you save money on paper.

At a set of ink carts every 2 weeks (assuming $60 - $70 per set) you could recoup your investment in about 2 months. It'll speed up print jobs and after the first 2 months you'll be working your way up the RoI ladder.

Spending $200 on a printer is not in our budget unfortunately. Luckily the local Wal-Mart is donating a couple ink cartridges to get us by for a month or two.

Budget ahead and use the cost of ink carts v the initial cost of the laser printer (with toner) and duplexing (half the paper) in your cost/benefit analysis that you present to your chief.
