I applied for this department online a couple of months ago and recently received an email from the department stating that I could test out during early January. I was just wondering if anybody knew how many they may be hiring. I currently reside in Atlanta, I have a bachelors degree and 0 LE experience I just didn't want to burn a ticket to fly all the way out there just to find out their hiring 2 individuals. Its pretty tough out here in GA to find anyone to hire so I was just hoping someone on this forum might have some advice on this one for me.

Just spoke with the detective in the recruiting division this afternoon. He said that if you were an out-of-state applicant, they would do a "Sat. through Wens." to complete most of the phases of the application process.
It's tough everywhere, but if this is what you want, you stick with it. -

Something else to keep in mind, many of us are already POST certified, and still can't find jobs. Just be sure to weigh all your options, now is not the best time to be applying.
Good luck.Comment

I don't want to discourage from making the trip. Just be aware there are hundreds of applicants for sometimes 2 openings. Lately, many departments have been running everyone through all the phases of testing, only for the city to pull the announcment and not hire anyone because the $$ aren't there, it been happening more and more.

So, having your self-sponsor POST (assuming that's what you have), is not as appealing as someone with a 4-year, military or lateral.
Either way, I wish you the best of luck.
No need to point out hiring status for those that just arbitrarily apply to a law enforcement agency. Just clogs the pipe for the rest of us.Comment

I don't know how it is in CO, but in CA, a lot of agencies will pull you out of the self-sponsor route and put you through their own academy. Or, once you've graduated and applied, you still attend the agencies academy.

At the end of the day, a POST cert. is a POST cert. Many agencies in Co won't even consider you unless you already have your POST completed. There are many CC programs available for somone to complete; and it all means the same once you get it.Last edited by Colorado LEO 2B; 10-24-2009, 01:43 AM.Comment

The good thing about Aurora is that people with POST certification don't get preference points. They are considered equal.
This is directly from Aurora's website.
Q. I have already completed the CCA or other Police Academy: will I be exempt from going through the Aurora Police Academy and/or will I receive preference for hiring?
A. No, if you are chosen for a position with the Aurora Police department, you will still have to pass the Aurora Police Academy. The Commission does not give preference points to applicants who have completed another agencies Academy. You can get preference points for going through the Cadet program. (Click here for rules regarding Cadet Preference points). You may also be eligible to apply as a lateral applicant (Click here for lateral information).
Anyone who wants to apply, should.Comment

That is true, and is correct for all entry level applicants that apply to a department that holds thier own academy. ie: State Patrol, Denver PD and Aurora PD. Other than those few, everyone else prefers POST certified as it saves them the $$, and a few departments will even reinburse you for the cost of the academy.Comment

I understand what your saying, but in Co it doesn't matter. I have my Co POST, a B.S. Degree, 6 years active duty military and my EMT. Trust me when I say it is very competitive right now. I know of atleast 10+ others like myself in the same boat, there just aren't enough jobs to fill for all the qualified applicants.
