Police: LAPD Officer Shot By Long Beach Police

    POSTED: 8:20 am PDT July 30, 2008
    UPDATED: 12:02 pm PDT July 30, 2008

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Wednesday that one of its officers was shot and wounded by Long Beach police.

LAPD Officer Sam Park said the officer was shot early Wednesday in Long Beach. The wounded officer was identified as 26-year-old Jason Geggie, a Long Beach resident.

The Long Beach Police Department said the wounded officer is in stable condition.

The Long Beach department said the 26-year-old man was shot at 12:30 a.m. after officers responded to a call of a man walking on the street with a firearm. The reporting party said the man was brandishing a firearm near Termino Avenue and 4th Street.

"Officers responded to a report of a man walking down the street with a firearm," said Zapalski, speaking from the scene of the shooting. "They contacted the man and an officer-involved shooting occurred."

The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Mira Mar Avenue. Geggie was shot in the arm and torso, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department.

Geggie was booked for "exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer in a threatening manner" and "exhibiting a firearm at any person in a threatening manner," according to the news release.

Long Beach police said in a news release that their department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office are conducting investigations.

Long Beach police will conduct a criminal investigation, according to the release. The LAPD will conduct an administrative investigation, according to the release.

The department did not release the name of the officer who fired on Geggie.

We will hear more as time goes by but without any more data than this and without even knowing if it is pertinent.

    1. Don't carry when drinking.
    2. Don't carry when emotionally upset
    3. For sure don't carry when both are true.

You are suggesting that alcohol might have played a part in this?.....shocking......

Maybe 77th needs to change the "Shoot" to "417" then print and redistribute these shirts again. Not that this guy was shooting but just the general message about guns and alcohol- If that turns out to be a factor.

This is just another example of those silly Long Beach Coppers over reacting, the LAPD guy was just IDing himself by waving his gun around at the other cops, Long Beach just didn't know that's how we say hi to each other....

Ok sarcasm aside, this is a bad incident and more bad PR for us, I am sure we will all have a training bulletin passed out when I go back to work tomorrow... Guns/ Booze= no no.

Glad the copper survived but he's going to be looking into a new line of work.

I heard from someone down there that his GF just broke up with him, and he was 647F and upset with a shotgun/taclight. There's more to it, but let's just say when he recovers, he will be posting here asking if this incident will hurt his chances of getting rehired.

Radio news reported that he's been assigned to Traffic for about 18 months. Don't know how long he's been an officer, but I'm guessing it won't be for much longer.

He's part of the "new and improved" LAPD... 'nuff said. ( At least IF it had been a deputy, he'd have loudly id'ed himself -"Put your guns away, butthead,I'm a DEP !" and a legit gunbattle would have ensued ; The rest of us would have had the sense to RUN.......

Makes you wonder how people are passing the PSYCH exams at city occupational these days....
