    Just curious, if a police officer retires with an out of state (non-CA) tax free disability pension and moved to California, does California tax it even if the feds do not?

    I guess a lot depends on how it's reported on your 1099. The 1099 usually has two boxes. One notes your gross pension and the other notes the taxable amount.

      Can't answer your question, but I have more questions:

      Why would anyone want to move to California? Is your disability pension based on psychiatric issues?

        No they don't. Tax-free is still tax free. You pay California tax if any part of it is taxable.
