Do your research. You may need more college and coming from NC will most likely need to complete a full academy. (NC may not qualify for a waiver.)

With 4 or 5 years on, you will definitely need to attend a full police academy in California and most likely will not be eligible for an academy waiver. I had 24 years in AZ before retiring. I was in the most recent graduating class of the CA POST requalification course and the first class to have to new CA POST mandates and new laws, including a minimum 84 score on written test to pass. A few guys including former LAPD Officer FAILED out. The amount of training hours in each Learning domain (LD) are staggering. Just for an example, you now need 16 hours of shotgun training. Good luck to the newbies that weren't in policing prior to the 2000's. You better do your homework if you are not willing to attend the full academy.
