As far as police departments go in southern California how does Costa Mesa PD rate. Seems that you cant beat the pay and benifits, but hows the rest of the department? Is it a busy and fun place to work?

Well you can beat the pay and benfits at several PD's nearby. That's a non-issue though. Busy is subjective as is fun. Just apply everywhere and get a job.

Last year or two CM had people leaving and the troops were generally unhappy. But there has been a change in administration and I understand things are improving and the lateral-out flow is being stemmed.

CM if in the center of a regional debate on immigration as they are one of the very few smaller agencies to institute having INS/ICE come in and screen all their arrestees for immigration status and deportation proceedings.

CM is also near Newport Beach and also near Santa Ana so you have two VERY different populations converging and coming/going. Throw into that CMs proximity to Irvine and the various Asian cultures are represented (mostly Viet and Chinese). You are exposed to a great deal of all three. The only significant population you do not get much exposure to is black. There isn't a black-dominated populace for at least 20 miles (Long Beach).

And hey, it is home to my favorite restaurant, The Pasta Connection on Harbor/19th! Great town with a good cross section of people like was said above. I lived there for a few years and have a good buddy on the department right now. He really seems to enjoy it.

Also, according to PORAC, CMPD has negotiated their current raise that will put them at the highest paid dept in So Cal. Of course that probably won't last long until other dept's use this as leverage in contract negotiations.
