  • Academy Question

I will be going to the academy this summer. Luckily, I have a few months to get myself into shape. I've been running and taking kickboxing classes. My question is for anyone who has actually gone through the academy. What is the percentage of drop outs? What are the reasons for people to drop out? I know there is a lot of running, so how much running should I actually be prepared for? I'm asking this because I hate running but I am forcing myself to run at least 4 times a week.

    Thanks for any help.

The CD academy looked pretty intense. You should be able to run 3 miles in 30 minutes. If you can do that you will be ok. Do push ups too.

sheriffs academies up here (NorCal) run like crazy. i'd run at least three miles a day, do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and, just for good measure, throw some leg lifts in there.

It's not just running....there are a couple steep flights of stairs that you run on.

Are you going to a correctional officer academy or a POST basic academy for a deputy position? There is a difference in the amount and type of training you'll receive.

The drop out percentage varies from class to class and academy to academy. If you tell the academy you'll be attending you might find responses from recent graduates of that program.

People drop out for all kinds of reasons. We had two drop out on day one after a little bit of yelling by our drill instructor. I guess they weren't committed. The majority of our losses were in academics and scenarios with a couple tossed out in shooting and driving. We only had one fail out for not passing PT and she was an overweight short 30 year old who had difficulty both making the run times and getting over a 6' wall.

              Good luck.
If you see me running try to keep up!

i hear the C/D academy is a lot tougher than the SD regional academy... I hear it's tougher because it's all run by the SHeriffs Dept and is only for C/D deputies, unlike the regional academy.

a buddy of mine dropped out due to medical reasons. he ended up going to the next academy class and making it through. i think a majority drop out due to physical injuries and academics... i hear some can't pass shooting, but it's rare. i heard one girl got fired from her sponsored agency (harbor PD) at the regional academy because she had no command presence.

but nothing can really prevent physical injuries expect be careful. and do lots of running... you might sprain an ankle or get shin splints due to running. or you could sprain or dislocate your shoulder during defensive tactics... just be careful...

You can not fail the SD academy based on that. She might have just quit over it.. but i doubt that... it's not even much of an issue that comes up until scenarios- which is the last two weeks. It's an FTO issue.

Some people in academy forget that they are still on probation, and if you do something stupid, maybe create a ruckus somewhere, you might get the boot.

Thanks for all the great advice! The big thing that I am noticing is that they basically run you to death. Unfortunately, I hate running, but it sounds like I just have to do. Thanks everyone!

Gemini, you really need to be on my site. I have a lot of info you need now and will be needing in the academy.
