Does anyone know anything about the procedures to obtain a cali post certificate, for a lateral transfer to LAPD??

I am a po in Illinois and LAPD wont concider any of my police exp unless I come in as a lateral. I dont know if I have enough credits from the academy and school.

LAPD didn't used to take laterals; they used to have a 10-week academy for CA. LEO's who held a Basic CA. POST certificate, but not sure what they're doing now. You might have to go through their academy; you might check with them before getting into it too much.

Even if you take the POST equivalency exam,LAPD won't recognize it- they'll make you go back thru a min 12 week training academy, and then you'll still have to "fight" to get your step pay.Had a classmate in LAPD academy that came from NYPD,she quit in week 11( of then a 24 wk academy- its 28 wks now) and went back to NYPD- we were happy to see her in her uniform from NYPD ( she came back to see her classmates)when we graduated! Check Ca.Post.Gov then also check out at least 5 other CA. agencies////

I really dont mind going thru the academy I really wanted to come in (I hope this doesnt jinx me) at a higher pay scale I know it is really expensive in Cali. My wife is going to have to find a job quick, but we dont know if she will be through with nursing school by the time they call me. Oh well. thanx for the info..I looked up the waiver info already. Damn thats crazy you have to fight for your pay step increase. Im starting to hear alot of negative things about LAPD. I think its the right move. The only problem with testing with other agencies is the travel to the sites for the test. I can only do one.

If you get into LASD instead you can get nearly as much OT as you want to cover the lower pay scale which will get you through.

As I understand it, LAPD does not take laterals. (Or liberals j/k)

Anywho, LAPD does recognize a CA POST certificate if you are entering the reserve program. I work with a guy who used to work for LAPD. When he was there about three years ago, they only took out of state without LAPD academy into the reserve program.

They may have changed their policy. I know they are hurting for officers. For a while now, they have made you sign a contract for I think three years or you have to pay something like 30 grand for the academy training you received. I could be wrong on the numbers above.

LAPD doesn't do things like anyone else in Southern California.

LAPD does take laterals, especially from inside California. If you have a POST certificate, you can lateral in and only have to attend a two month academy. It's a kickback type of academy, just to teach you policies, procedures and tactics. Like ejay said, LAPD does most things a bit differently than other departments.

If you're coming from outside California, then you would need to contact the California POST people and see if your academy and training meet California standards to obtain a Californina POST certificate. If so, then the same rules would apply as if you came from inside California. I've got a buddy from New Hampshire who is doing that now.

                    .

Yeah. They do. like they THINK every cop that laterals to them ( Police Specialist position) is some kind of WANNABE LAPD from the start- and guess what? even if you have experience with a Ca. agency, you only get 1/2 time credit, meaning your 5-10 yrs of experience equals only 2 1/2 to 5 yrs of LAPD experience.!!! but then again, lately LAPD stinks like SH*T to me for what they are doing (anti- AB1882)......
