MTV expressed shock at the slaying of a music coordinator outside his home early Sunday.
"We are shocked and saddened to learn about the tragic death of [Gabriel Aron Benmeir], who was a valued member of the MTV family and a beloved and dedicated colleague and friend," MTV said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to his family."
Law enforcement sources said Benmeir, 30, was shot in the head early Sunday in front of his Mid-Wilshire apartment. Several residents reported hearing a gunshot at the time but did not call police.
A man walking his dog about 6:30 a.m. found Benmeir's body on the sidewalk on Packard Street between Stanley and Spaulding avenues.
The sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said the victim was discovered face down in a pool of blood. Detectives are looking into what kind of weapon was used, but the sources said it could have been a shotgun.
There are currently no suspects in the case, the sources said.
Neighbors questioned by police reported hearing a gunshot at about 1 a.m., and police determined the victim lay on the sidewalk for several hours before being discovered.
Benmeir was a resident of the neighborhood who had parked his car and was walking to his home, police said. Friends of the victim told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that he was in the music industry and that he worked for MTV. He is listed as a music coordinator and production coordinator on several MTV shows, including "Punk'd" and "Top Pop Group."
