We have a LOT of units out there right now. Prayers to the officer for a quick recovery.

    Thanks.

The officer was not shot. He scraped his head in a fall and is OK.

The suspect is dead. Don't know yet who caught him or how he died.

Now they say he was shot, but it was a superficial grazing wound.

Man killed in Monterey Park shootout identified

Authorities on Monday released the name of a man who they say was killed after engaging Monterey Park police in a shootout Sunday afternoon.

Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. Cheryl MacWillie identified Edgar Arbizo Battad, 63, of Monterey Park as the man killed in the gunbattle that left a trail of victims in its wake.

A police officer suffered a grazing bullet wound to his head, two bystanders were struck in the leg by bullets, and another man was stabbed in the leg.

The incident began when Battad rear-ended another vehicle while driving near Newmark and Garfield avenues, according to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Battad allegedly left the scene, but was followed to his apartment in the 100 block of Newmark Avenue by the other driver.

When confronted, Battad stabbed the other driver in the leg and fled into his apartment, police said.

After Monterey Park police arrived and approached the apartment, they said Battad fired several shots through the front door with his .44 Magnum. One of the shots grazed the head of Officer Gilbert Alvarez. Battad escaped out the back door when another officer returned fire.

As officers pursued him, Battad turned and fired several more shots at them, police said. They fired back and hit him several times, killing him.

During the firefight, two bystanders about 600 feet away were each hit once in the leg by stray bullets. The bystanders, the stabbing victim, and Alvarez were all hospitalized in stable condition.

Though police and sheriff's deputies initially combed the area looking for a second suspect, the search was called off a few hours later. Authorities said it has now been determined that there were no other shooters involved.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau continues to investigate. A motive for the shooting is still unclear.
