An early morning shooting in Palm Springs left a wanted parolee and a K-9 officer dead while the life of another officer was saved by his bullet proof vest, the police department reported Sunday.

The shooting took place at 1:19 a.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Verona Road when two police officers tried to make contact with a man they recognized as a wanted parolee, department spokeswoman officer Rhonda Long said in a news release.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld until family is notified, fled on foot when officers tried to detain him, Long said.

When he broke free, one of the officers sent his K-9 partner, Ike, to apprehend him, Long said.

As Ike attempted to catch the parolee, he produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds, hitting both the officer and Ike, Long said.

The two officers returned fire, killing the parolee, she said.

Ike’s handler, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot in the right side of his body, but the bullet struck his bullet proof vest, saving his life, Long said.

He was taken to the hospital and treated for his injury and released.

The second officer, an eight-year veteran of the Palm Springs Police Department, was also taken to the hospital where he was treated for an injury to his right hand sustained during the struggle with the suspect, Long said.

He, too, was treated for his injury and released, she said.

Police did not say which hospital the officers were taken to or if the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.

Ike, a German shepherd, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, she said.

He was a two-year veteran of the police department.

“Ike is the first K-9 to die in the line of duty in the history of the Palm Springs police K-9 program,” Long said in a news release.

“Ike’s loss is being felt by every officer at the Palm Springs Police Department. Ike was a loyal and faithful partner and he will be missed,” she said.

Names of the two police officers involved in the shooting were not released.

As is standard procedure following a shooting, both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.

This article is poorly written as it makes it seem that the handler was killed as we generally don't refer to the dogs as officers in SoCal.

Sorry for the loss of the dog, not the parolee. I wish a speedy recovery to the officers injured.

Be safe out there guys, crime rates are going down but it seems more people are shooting it out with us.
