On-duty SDPD officer hurt in crash

SAN MARCOS — A San Diego police motorcycle officer was seriously injured early Wednesday morning in a collision in San Marcos when he was on his way to work.

Motor officer Bruce Byrd, 47, of San Marcos was heading east on West Borden Road about 5:45 a.m. when he collided with a Honda Civic making a left turn from Palo Alto Court, sheriff’s Sgt. Stephanie Guerra said.

Byrd was unable to stop in time and hit the driver’s side door of the silver car. Cynthia Kusimoto, 27, of Escondido told deputies she had stopped at the stop sign but did not see the motorcycle when she pulled into the roadway, Guerra said.

Byrd suffered a broken left knee, an open fracture below the knee, a dislocated left hip and an injury to his right hand, said police detective Gary Hassen.

Officials said Byrd was conscious when he was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he underwent surgery. Kusimoto did not go to a hospital.

Byrd, a 19-year veteran of the force, was in uniform when the crash occurred. Motorcycle officers are considered on-duty as they travel to and from work because they are expected to conduct enforcement if necessary, Hassen said.

Byrd has been in the Traffic Division for nine years, working the past three years as a motorcycle officer. He works out of the Western Division near Friars Road and Morena Boulevard.

Guerra said sheriff’s deputies were investigating the crash and would decide later if Kusimoto should be cited. San Diego police were conducting their own investigation.

Quite factually, these may be debilitating injuries that may cause a retirement. I hope not, but they are severe. Good luck to officer Byrd. Heal fast, heal whole and stay positive.
