  • URGENT: Brother Officer In Serious Need For Financial Aid

This is a recent call for assistance by the California Association of Highway Patrolmen:

    March 24, 2011
    AREA REP INFORMER
    CAHP Cares Request

Several months ago, the CAHP Board of Directors voted to establish a "CAHP Cares" fund. The purpose of the fund is to collect donations from CAHP members for CAHP when a fellow officer and his/her family are in need of financial assistance. Most recently, CAHP members contributed over $3,000 to assist the daughter of CHP Cadet Randy Atchison, who passed away during training at the Academy.

Now another CAHP family member is in need of assistance. Sergeant Morgan, I.D. 12116, of the Willows Area office, is currently facing an extremely difficult financial situation. Morgan’s 26 year-old son has had ulcerative colitis since he was 16 years old. This is a chronic condition which flares up and calms down from time, but which has severe consequences, including chronic weight loss, malnutrition, anemia and the development of a cancerous condition due to the years of constant inflammation.

Because Sergeant Morgan’s son is 26 years old, he is no longer eligible for coverage under his parents’ insurance plan. In addition, because he has had this chronic condition since he was 16, it is considered a pre-existing condition by insurance companies and he cannot obtain private health insurance. Because his condition is not permanent, he is not able to qualify for Medicare or Medi-Cal.

In the near future, Sgt. Morgan’s son will undergo two necessary surgeries that will allow him to stop taking the chemotherapy drugs and steroids that have been used to control the bleeding and to prevent cancer from growing. However, without health insurance, the costs are estimated to be approximately $250,000.

Sgt. Morgan’s wife, who is a nurse, is currently on disability and unable to work as a result of a shoulder surgery. Their eldest daughter is mentally disabled and entirely dependent upon the family for her care. Their younger daughter, who is 18, was just diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is also currently undergoing treatment for her condition.

Clearly, the Morgan family has a tremendous amount on their plates and the financial stress of the cost of their son’s upcoming surgery is only adding to that. It is the wish of the CAHP that fellow members consider contributing to assist this family during their time of need. Donations can be sent to:

    CAHP Cares
    2030 V Street
    Sacramento, CA 95818
Please write "Morgan Family" on the memo section of the check.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

I told my wife about this story and she cried. Very sad. We always take our good fortunes for granted until we hear about the hardships of others. I pray that this family gets good news soon, from any source.

Yes, you may! Thank you! If you wish, you may call the CAHP at (916) 452-6751 and use a credit card. Thank you one and all who offer your assistance. This is indeed a case of need.

Good Lord! Just when I said, "man, that sucks!" it kept getting worse and worse. I'm a poor college student, but I'll scrounge up some money and send it in.

And sarge, it may do some good to post this in the general or off-duty sections.
