  • Where to live around LA

Where could a new LAPD officer afford to live that is going to be a good enviroment to raise children and has a good school district?

Live in Arizona....and you commute to LA.
This profession is not for people looking for positive reinforcement from the public. Very often it can be a thankless job and you can't desire accolades, because those are not usually forthcoming. Just do your job to the best of your ability and live with the decisions you've made.

Some parts of the Inland Empire don't seem so bad and you can take the commuter train into LA. I think when I was there last it was like 7 dollars each way so its comparable or cheaper than gas. They may even have a monthly deal plan or something like that.

Commuter train to LA? Ya right.....
A few select places in the North Western San Fernando Valley aren't too bad but are VERY expensive. Simi Valley and Santa Clarita areas aren't too bad, Most of Orange County is nice, just keep in mind you are going to have to pay more and get less for your money unless you want to live in the ghetto. Anywhere in LA your kids will go to LAUSD (more ESL than regular learning and still no one graduates) unless you are paying for private school. You can live in the IE, but keep in mind its a long drive not just to work, but to court on your days off.

Ventura county, Orange county, Simi Valley, Santa Clarita, Thousand Oaks.

I strongly suggest not living anywhere where the city of LA runs things. I live 40 miles from my station and while the commute may get to me at times, being able to drive around on my days off with seeing gangsters and crack heads, tags, police helicopters etc.

I would try looking into Temple City because they have a good school district and it is not far from the 10 freeway. Temple city is also the neighboring city of Arcadia, which is one of the safest neighborhoods and best cities to raise your children in the United States. (per Yahoo Finance in 2010) Alhambra is also a good place to look into. Both cities are close to the 10 freeway or you can just take Huntington Dr. (Route 66 a 45 mph zone) all the way to LA. which would skip all the traffic and get you to downtown in 25 minutes.
