  • Maryland P.O. reaching out to LAPD P.O.

So I'm a cop in Maryland and I'm interested in making the big move out west. Would any veteran (5+ years) care to speak to me about this? PMs welcomed

Go to www.joinlapd.com and call the recruiters for info.

Check the CA POST website at http://post.ca.gov/ as far as transferring certificates rather than having to attend a full academy, whether or not you are able to do this will determine whether or not you would be considered a lateral by LAPD, makes a difference.

For now though, I would NOT consider the LAPD for several reasons- New guys and laterals are getting hired 20% less than base pay, our contract is up this summer and we are looking at taking a huge hit on pay and benefits and the city is building a new pension tier for new hires which is going to force guys to work longer in order to get percentages of their pension.

For most new hires the starting pay is around 46k base. We get no overtime and pay 10% into pension off the top, take out taxes etc and you're talking 30k take home, now do you think you can live in LA for that?

After all that if you have specific questions you can PM me and I'll do my best to help out.

Any rumors on possible retirement plans? I guess the days of starting out around 60k are going to be long forgotten now..

          Love it.
Other officer: Oh that's right, I forgot, you're God's gift to police work.
Me: At least someone recognizes it.

Turns out basic police work isn't so hard, you just have to leave the station.

Rent is definitely expensive out there, when I was about to move there for LAPD, I looked at a studio in Burbank for roughly 1800. I don't know about you, but I don't want roommates after college for any length of time... especially in this job.

                Nickyboy,

If you want to PM me your number I will give you a call tomorrow. I am from the East Coast and moved out here 10 years ago for the job and can give you the pros and cons of such a move.
