    Position
    Under general supervision, protects life and property, prevents crime, arrests criminals, and generally enforces laws and ordinances; responsible for designated areas; works assigned shifts; may be assigned to patrol by driving or walking. *This is a temporary position which may or may not convert into a permanent position.

    The City of Sierra Madre
    The City of Sierra Madre, a 2007 All-America City, is a unique foothill village located in Los Angeles County at the base of the San Gabriel Valley Mountains with a population of approximately 11,700. The City is a full service municipality operating under the Council/Manager form of government. The City has approximately 60 full-time employees assigned to eight operating departments. The dedicated City staff provides excellent service to the community. The City was incorporated in 1907 as a General Law city. It has its own Water Department, Library, Police and Fire Departments. This is a great opportunity to serve a small town police department in a beautiful and historic setting.

    The Police Department
    The City of Sierra Madre enjoys the reputation as one of the safest cities in Southern California. It is our intent to preserve that reputation. For over 100 years, the officers of Sierra Madre Police Department have been committed to ensuring public safety and working with the community to deliver superior services. Our goal is to become model for 21st century small town policing.
    Essential Duties
    The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

    * Patrols a designated area of the city in a vehicle or occasionally on foot or on bicycle; enforces motor vehicle operation and parking regulations, the penal code and city ordinances; prevents commission of crimes; inspects, reports, and corrects conditions which may lead to crime or delinquency;
    * Conducts complete traffic accidents, criminal, complaint and other investigations; writes reports on investigations; collects and preserves evidence; obtain witnesses; testifies in court;
    * Apprehends crime suspects and/or makes arrests; performs jail booking procedures, including fingerprinting and photographing of prisoners;
    * Gives first aid in medical emergencies;
    * Mediates disputes;
    * May be assigned to traffic control bicycle regulation and safety education, or the general traffic safety program;
    * May act as dispatcher in his/her absence.

    Requirements

    * US Citizen
    * High School Diploma or equivalent
    * Valid California Drivers License (Class "C" or higher)
    * Completion of a POST approved Police Academy
    * Vision must be corrected to 20/20
    * Proficient computer skills and knowledge in word processing and database programs
    * Must be able to type at least 45 words per minute (certificate must be provided prior to the Chief's oral)
    * Course work in Law Enforcement desirable

    Salary & Benefits
    The City's compensation and benefits package includes:

    * Annual salary range $53,221 - $74,903 DOQ (payable bi-weekly).
    * Up to $650 per month for health, dental and vision insurance coverage for employee and family; plus 25% of the cost in excess of $650/mo.
    * $50,000 A, D&D and life insurance.
    * Flexible Spending Accounts
    * 3/12 Work Schedule
    * Annual paid leave of:
    o 88 vacation hours (increasing after 5 years of service);
    o 11 designated holidays;
    o Annual sick leave accrual of 96 hours;
    * PERS Retirement Plan - 3% at 55. City pays the full share of the 9% employee contribution.
    * The City pays all employer taxes required under Federal, State and local laws
    * Uniform Allowance: $700/year
    * $5,000 Signing Bonus, $2,500 payable upon appointment and $2,500 after passing the 18 mo. Probationary period

    Applications must be complete and demonstrate that the minimum qualifications are met. All statements made on the application are subject to investigation and verification. Resumes may be attached to completed application forms as supplemental information, but will not be accepted in lieu of an official application form. The most qualified candidates will be selected to participate in an interview process. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will remain candidates until a final offer is accepted by the candidate who most closely meets the requirements of the City. The City may conclude that none of the candidates, even those who meet the minimum qualifications, are appropriate for the position.

    Testing scheduled for Thursday, January 20, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. Upon successful passing of the written test, qualified applicants will be invited to an entry level oral interview on Thursday, February 3, 2011 with the most qualified candidates participating in a Chief's oral on Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

    The successful candidate will also be required to pass:
    Upon successfully completion all of the required tests listed above, the candidate that is selected must pass a background investigation, psychological, polygraph, and medical examination.

      Curious...is this funded by a grant? Going to apply anyway, but just curious...scratch that...maybe it's referring to probation period
