  • California FOP Lodge 1

Does anyone know anything about this organization? Its president and agent for service of process is Roger Mayberry.

Judging from his bio, Mr. Mayberry and the organization are big supporters of Barbara Boxer.

I don't know anyone who belongs to the FOP in California, and I do not thing it represents any agency. As far as I know, it is just a social/fraternal organization.

I keep getting phone calls to solicit donations. As a rule, I do not give any money in response to call from professional fundraisers, because the fundraisers get a cut (often the majority). I cannot imagine any reason to give this one any money. When I want to give money to police causes, I do so directly, knowing the people involved and the use to which the funds will be put.

Any idea of what this group does?

the FOP is the Fraternal Order of Police. They are nation wide, and has finally made it to Calif. Roger Mayberry is an ex-PPOA (professional peace officers association, the union for LASD sergeants and lieutenants, non-sworn, and OPS sworn through the rank of Captain) president. He backs Boxer because she is pro-labor. FOP is a labor organization.

It's a legitimate organization, and even though I'm a member through PPOA, I won't give money to them. I just contribute to the Union.

I knew it was the Fraternal Order of Police, but that is not a charity. And if it has money to give to Democrats, it certain doesn't need (and isn't getting) mine, notwithstanding remarks such as:
"We are proud to support Senator Boxer and her untiring fight to end the violence on our streets and illegal drugs in our communities that threaten the safety and security of every American," said Roger D. Mayberry, President of the California State Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police.

Roger that....that is why I don't contribute to them (among other things).

They make the usual widows and orphans pitch, too. They are not registered as a charitable trust, so donations are not tax deductible.

I think the next time I call I will ask for their form 990 showing how they spent their funds.

Does the FOP have any juice in California? PORAC is the organization that has the political pull.

PORAC, followed by CPOA, I think. But, even if they are politically powerful, I would not see any reason to support them.

I think I will jerk the guy around for amusement the next time he calls. I've received half a dozen phone calls, but I usually don't answer.

Although, not an active participant, I am a member of the FOP, Inland Empire Lodge #2.

Here is information on the California FOP:

The FOP is real big in the southeast and somewhat on the east coast. I do not know anyone who is really involved with them out here in CA.

The call did not come from the Foundation, it came from Lodge 1, which is in Southern California.

The online solicitation material I found did not say that the organization (California State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police) is exempt under 501(c)(3).

Any organization that claims to be exempt under IRC 501(c)(3) and solicits contributions in California must register with the California Attorney General's Registry of Charitable Trusts, which is searchable online. The California Lodge is not registered. The FOP Foundation is not registered. There is an Fraternal Order of Police in Nashville that is registered, and an FOP Federal Lodge 12 in Imperial Beach that is registered.

The Grand Lodge for the FOP is located in Nashville. I am quite certain that subordinate lodges are functioning under the license and registration of the Grand Lodge.

I wish the FOP here was like it was on the east coast where they actually have lodges where you can go and let off some steam without any civies to beef you to your agency. It seems like nowadays everytime our cops go any where off duty there's a problem, and I dont think its just our guys fault. I think that civies have learned that most PD's has a "no beef to small" policy and they screw with our guys as soon as they realize who they are.
