hello folks, i've applied with the cdcr but received a letter notifying me they are unsure when the next academy will start. in the meantime, i've looked for other employment and offered to test for a security assistant for the la sheriff. does anyone have any insight on the jobs offered, experience, are you allowed a choice in what you want to work? i've worked as a "security agent" near an lax warehouse with decent pay compared to what i was used to, but the job was so dull. sit down in a chair for 8 hrs, have to bring your own lunch because no one will relieve you, asking permission to pee.

i'd rather be up and about, something physical and outdoors. appreciate any helpful responses.

I have seen them controlling access to parking lots. I do not know how long it is before you have a choice of assignments.

court house seccurity( metal detectors and perimeter checking), and I've seen a few at CJ.

I think pay is about $30K to $40K/yr- If you are young and the salary can cover your expenditures, I don't see a problem with it- the economy will come around in a few yrs, and you can use it as a stepping stone....

^ Well they're also utilized at other courthouses besides Downtown LA. eg - Alhambra, Pasadena, ELA, etc.. Not to mention at some community colleges.

They also work the Metro System with Deps if I'm not mistaking. They issue citations.

Does anyone know if they are actually hiring for this position? Or are they just testing?

According to their recruitment page, there is no security officer or assistant opening. There is, however, a CSO opening for their Avalon (Catalina Island) station.

fyi...testing for their security officer is Nov. 5, 0800 hrs, in Monterey park. Testing for their security assistant is on Oct. 29, 0800 hrs, in Monterey Park. http://www.lasd.org/recruitment/security.html

The eligibility list must be long since they've been testing at least twice a month. If they're not actively hiring.

With the impending LASO/OPS merger, there might be a push to hire more.
