  • Spca los angeles Humane Officer

I recently noticed an agency from los angeles was looking to hire for Humane Officers. Is anyone a current Humane Officer or have any info if their are sworn or how much police authority they have? I appreciate any feedback.

Check them out, thoroughly, before you sign up. Before I left L.A. there was an animal rights activist who had started up a uniformed/badged group of Humane Officers. They were not the real deal.

Three things I know for sure: (1) No bad deed goes unrewarded, (2) No good deed goes unpunished, and (3) It is entirely possible to push the most devoted, loyal and caring person beyond the point where they no longer give a 5h!t.

Do you mean this one from spcaLA? http://spcala.com/careers/careers_ho1.shtml

This position is for a "trainee"... Although an officer graduating from a basic police academy has received a thorough introduction to basic law enforcement subjects, the new officer cannot be expected to immediately assume the full responsibilities of an experienced humane officer. The new officer must receive additional training in the field where he / she can learn from an experienced humane officer.

You will find them mentioned in Section 830.9 of the Penal Code.

830.9. Animal control officers are not peace officers but may
exercise the powers of arrest of a peace officer as specified in
Section 836 and the power to serve warrants as specified in Sections
1523 and 1530 during the course and within the scope of their
employment, if those officers successfully complete a course in the
exercise of those powers pursuant to Section 832. That part of the
training course specified in Section 832 pertaining to the carrying
and use of firearms shall not be required for any animal control
officer whose employing agency prohibits the use of firearms.

For the purposes of this section, "firearms" includes capture
guns, blowguns, carbon dioxide operated rifles and pistols, air guns,
          handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

rf 59, I used to work as a Level 1 Humane Officer in Los Angeles and they are sworn officers. They are not peace officers, but have peace officer powers while on duty per the California Corporations Code 14502, they are not in the penal code. They are able to investigate, arrest, and enforce laws pertaining to state animal cruelty laws. There are two Humane Officer classifications, one is a Level 1 and the other is a Level 2. The difference is the Level 1 carries a firearm and is required to attend a full basic police academy(Rio Hondo or Fullerton) Level 2 does not carry and is only required the pc 832 training course.

Dang. Didn't we get the humane officer vs. animal control officer thing cleared up already? That's a thread that pops up every year or so around here.
