  • Apple Valley hiring?

Does anyone know if any agencies within/near Apple Valley/Victorville are hiring? Thinkin about relocating from Tx. Also, ya'll know if Tx law enforcement license can be transfered to Cal or do you have to start from scratch? I'm open to both corrections or patrol. Thanks

Both Apple Valley and Victorville fall under the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. As to whether you can transfer your certification from Texas, that depends. You can apply under the POST waiver process:

    http://www.post.ca.gov/training/btw_intro.asp

You must have at least one year of actual police experience in addition to other requirements to take part in the POST waiver course. Corrections experience does not count. Get a letter from your current agency attesting to your experience and gather copies of all of your training certificates. Submit them along with $75 to California POST. About a month or so later POST will send you a letter advising if you are eligible to continue in the waiver process. If they approve you, either take the 136 hour course at a local California police academy or just take the skills/written test. As a side note, not all agencies accept the waiver, so if there is a certain agency you are interested in, check to see if they accept POST waivers.

Look here for California listings. BNSF Railroad Police are advertising for vacancies in San Bernardino and Barstow, which are not too far away. Chino PD is also advertising.

I'm a deputy with SBSD. All the incorporated cities in the high desert except for Barstow contract with SBSD for police services, so you would have to get hired on with us to work one of the cities. Right now, it is my understanding that we are barely hiring. The current academy class is only about 20, and most of them are putting themselves through.

With SBSD, you would have to work in custody prior to transfering to patrol. The average still seems to be about six months to year in the jail depending on the desire to transfer to a desert or valley patrol station. That includes laterals. You get rotated to a patrol station based on seniority, but it could take some time because seniority is based on date of hire.

Also, I don't think we take out of state laterals despite CA post having a waiver process. There was a deputy in my senior academy class who had about 5 years with a mid-sized Illinois PD. I know others from out of state who have had to go through the academy. SBSD is kinds big on doing things our way, so I don't think this will change. Its a 26 week stress academy.

There are some other departments in the high desert. Fort Irwin and The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow bot have their own DOD police. The pay is low, but they are not CA POST agencies. Apple Valley schools, Hesperia schools, Snowline schools, and Victor Valley College each has their own small PD. Whether they are hiring or not, or take out of state laterals, I can not say.

If you have any question, let me know.
