  • LAPD Uniforms

This question is for LAPD...Where do you all order your uniforms from? What I noticed different was that the buttons on on the lapel are silver. A company name or name brand would be helpful. My Chief likes them and put me in charge of finding out.

Also, just for my own information what is the history with the uniform. I noticed that most LAPD officers do not have any type of citation bar or pins on the uniform only a name tag. Also no chain for the whistle?

There are several places we get our uniforms, many officers get them custom tailored. The buttons say LAPD on them, get them at the Galls shop or academy store. Uniform is plain and simple, traffic guys wear patches and whistle chains, patrol guys don't.

Many Officers wear only a name tag on the class c short sleeve uniform with a pin from the division they work or unit such as gangs. I have name tag, unit pin and shooting medal on class c's. Class A's are worn with a tie/ tie bar+ name tag etc. Only for dress occasions officers will wear service ribbons earned on the job and in the military.

here is a link to our service ribbons http://www.lapdonline.org/history_of...asic_view/1127

I was (a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away) LAPD for 30 years. Our uniforms were 100% wool. Like mtx says, a variety of makers, but all must have a label indicating that the garment meets or exceeds LAPD requirements.

        Here's one company link:

The "silver" buttons attach at our epaulets and take the place of our shirt pocket flap buttons. Galls probably can't sell you real LAPD buttons, but a similiar style. They are three piece: button, backing disc, and cotter pin.

        Here's Q/M's button link:

Here's Keanu Reeves and Forrest Whittaker correctly wearing the LAPD Class 'A' unform:

        Good luck with your efforts.

In the past I have bought some good shirts, (not LAPD though) from Sinatra Mfg. in LA. I went there once to get measured with and without a vest. After that all I had to do was call and tell them what I wanted as far as sleeves, zippers, patches, etc. They are a little heavy and pricey but darn good shirts.

You can pick up "P" buttons from LB Uniforms that do not say LAPD on them.

Yeah, I resisted telling him about Sinatra. Lots of LAPD cops swear by Sinatra. They are very, very thick, like two layers of wool. The guys tell me that they, "last forever." It's my opinion only, but they seem about as comfy as wearing a garment made of firehose.

Sinatras is $500 for two uniforms and it takes them over 8 weeks to deliver. Sinatras also went through a time that they changed their fabric supplier and after a few trips to the dry cleaner the 100% wool started to look purple.

My shirts are tan and they seem to hold their color well. Yeah- thick and expensive. Good for winter wear and one other side bonus: blood comes out pretty good.
Hopefully, only the game wardens will need to appreciate that.
