FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Fort Smith Police Cpl. Bamey Parsons was shot and injured while conducting a traffic stop early Sunday, the police department said.

Parsons was in the 2900 block of Cliff Drive at about 1:18 a.m. when a driver got out of a vehicle and started shooting, police said. Parsons was hit in the chest, leg and foot.

The shooter drove away in a white Chevrolet Avalanche or similar vehicle, police said. He is described as white with a dark complexion, dark hair and about 20 to 25 years old.

Parsons is a 24-year veteran of the department assigned to the department's patrol operations unit.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Fort Smith police at 479-709-5000.
