  • Good place to apply in AZ?

I was wondering where a good place to apply in AZ would be. My problem is that I live in Minnesota, so I want to go somewhere that I have a decent shot of getting on. I listed my qualifications in another recent thread, I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time on a department that has a reputation for jerking around potential recruits (for example, I hear that about Mesa ALL the time, although I don't know if that is a fair assesment.)

At this point I really don't care where I get on, or how "bad" the community is or how unpopular department politics may be. I just want that FIRST police job to get some experience under my belt. I want to go someplace that WILL hire me so I can "learn the trade." If I don't like where I'm at after a few years, I'll cross that bridge at that time, one way or another.

Lately I've been looking into Tempe pretty seriously, but I'm wondering if there are any other places I should give some more consideration to.

Tempe is one of the harder places to get hired in this area. Phoenix PD would be a good one to try, maybe Gilbert as well. Pinal County (I work there) is hiring qualified people and doing so quickly. Our next academy is in June and we are looking to put 20 recruits in that class.

The choice is yours...totally yours....PHX, Peoria, Chandler, Avondale, Scottsdale,Goodyear, PCSO, MCSO, DPS, Casa Grande, Buckeye Glendale, Surprise...everybody is hiring, take your pick....beware.....Mesa is a good PD with serious $$ problems, Tempe pays well but is a little on the uptight side. Point at any city on the Phoenix area map and check out the department...chances are they are hiring. You are the buyer and it is a buyers market!!!

If you can't get hire in AZ, then you should consider a different career.

          Glendale PD

Is the Glendale PD testing difficult? According to their site, looks like they base it all on your background; no oral board, just an interview with the BI based on what he will be looking for in your background.

            Try Yuma P.D.

From what I've heard, they're pretty decent. Well-paid, trained, and equipped. They're hiring like mad now. Cost of living is much lower than Phoenix area, also

I know it may shock alot of people on this board but phoenix area agencies are not the only ones in the state. They are the biggest agencies in the state but not always the best. Use the internet. Every department in the state (pretty much) has a website. Look at their communities and schools (if you have kids) and make a decision for you. Dont just settle for any department Pick some of your favorites and go for them. There are alot of other quality departments besides the phoenix area.

                Good Luck!

What academy do they go to?

You have to live within 10 miles of the county line as the crow flies. We have one class going now and two more starting in the next couple of months and all recruits are attending CARLOTA.

Yuma County Sheriff's Department is hurting too. We just got three of their guys.

Every jurisdiction and agency in this state is in a hiring frenzy because of unprecedented growth and low unemployment. Standards are the same as everywhere but in Phoenix alone every agency is screaming for more officers.
Well first, life dealt you a bad hand, then you decided to double down.

There are a lot of good choices in the Phx area. Each has its good points and its bad. Departments on the edges are experiencing the largest amount of growth (both west and east sides) and therefore will have more opportunities for promotion in the future. Florence P.D. is a small department but will exploding soon due to a huge community being built down there which will also affect Pinal County.

Like said before everyone is in dire need of officers and with July 1 being the start of the fiscal year there are new budget openings.
