will bankruptcy disqualify from getting hired on a police department.

Not necessarily. If you can show you are now current with your bills, a bankruptcy is not necessarily an instant disqualifier. They will also look at how long it's been since the debts were discharged/restructured.

Filed for BK in April 96. I am a cop now. It is all about what happened next.

A lot will depend on circumstances.

Bankruptcy is a legal right. Absent any evidence of fraud, the mere fact that you have undergone bankruptcy cannot be the sole basis upon which employment is denied. Your BI may inquire into the circumstances that led up to the bankruptcy, including the examination of supporting court records regarding reported assets and liabilities at the time when the bankruptcy petition was filed. The whole purpose here is to assess your ability and willingness to effectively manage financial responsibilities, as a measure of your dependability and integrity.
