  • British police uniform question

How can you guys wear those reflective yellow jackets in the summer like I see on tv right now?

  • #2
Hi there, in the U.K we have a national uniform project now so all police forces in England & Wales wear pretty much the same kit. There are 2 different types of hi vis yellow jackets one for the summer months which is made of a light weight breathable material. And a waterproof heavier one more like a standard jacket for winter. I don't know which you've seen. We have to wear them for certain duties due to health & safety risk assessment and some because it raises police visability. Hope this answers your question

Don't forget that summers tend to be a little cooler in Britain than in most parts of North America.

Is this also why all British police forces have the same rank insignia? See like here in the US, 2 chevrons in one dept. could mean corporal and they could be in blue where as in the next town over they could have green chevrons and 2 chevrons could mean senior police officer .... it gets very confusing over here in that aspect.

The rank insignia is closely tied to the military 3 stripes is sgt sameas the army, 2 pips inspector, army leftenant etc.

The rank structure is the same for every force in England & Wales up to the rank of Chief Superintendent, then things differ slightly. The Metropolitan police which cover london have their own rank system above that of Chief superintendent. It goes,
            constable
            sergeant
            inspector
            chief inspector
            superintendent
            chief superintendent
            assistant chief constable
            deputy chief constable
            chief constable
the met have a different higher rank structure above that of chief super but I'm not sure what it is. Perhaps a met copper could help

No we wear the yellow jackets so that we become BOMBPROOF! and to make us look bloody stupid! Jesus! to wear this for Health n Safety! so that we are visible??? Cause no one would know what a Policeman looked like if he was not wearing one!!!

Also they are great to keep all your Officer Safety kit hidden from use! Like your spray! your Cuffs etc!!! cause when you are fighting... sorry arresting a violent suspect you need to be wearing more outer clothing that makes you look like a bloody sumo westler! rant rave!!

Ah cockney sarcasm, but I see your point. The jackets we have are of a short style so it dosen't affect your duty belt or access to your equipment. On the health & safety topic, would you direct traffic in the dark without one?
We were all given a memo saying that if we were performing any kind of traffic duty, anything from speaking to a motorist for a minor offence to dealing with an accident we would have to perform "a rolling risk assessment of the situation" and if the officer in question felt there was no need to wear their hi vis jacket and were injured as a result that their insurance would be affected

What ever style they are you still look like a sack of sh*te in them, I hated mine.
in the met after Ch Supt there is Commander, then Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner then Politically Correct Waste of Space Blairite tosser. they also have an openly gay DAC in the wings for when they need to appease some gay rights and they can wheel him out and inflict him on some smaller force, sorry service!

I never said I was a fan of the yellow jacket, or that I looked good in mine I was just stating the reasons for which were were supplied them and advised to wear them.

I'm openly gay in the Force and I can assure you they dont push me out front when there is major issues with the Gay Community.

As for Blairite...... What can I say......

Well perhaps you arent high enough up the SERVICE to be pushed out front. Why else would they have let him get away with promoting anarchy, doing drugs and living with a criminal if they werent saving him for a rainy day. If he had been a straight white PC he would have been out on his ear.

If your no longer in the job then why are you bothered?!!
Plus I find it insulting that you imply that Gay officers are only placed in high ranking posts to fill diversity quota's. Although I have only been in the police 4 years I have yet to meet anyone who has either been promoted or recruited solely because they come from a minority group.

Anyway as far as I can recall this thread was about British police uniform NOT the conduct of senior police officers

The Met system is slightly different...they have commanders, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner and then the Commissioner.
