  • Proud to be a "NEOCON"

If anyone out there wonders what it means to be a neocon ( as I did ) the following link defines it. I'd heard the term a lot and wondered what exactly it meant. Everytime I've seen it it was used in a derogatory context, but now that I have looked at it's definition, I consider it a great compliment.

It's no different than the word "liberal" being used pejoratively. Yet when I look up the definition of liberal I get:

    1. broad-minded: tolerant of different views and standards of behavior in others
    2. politics progressive politically or socially: favoring gradual reform, especially political reforms that extend democracy, distribute wealth more evenly, and protect the personal freedom of the individual

Now, if you look at the strict language, most of these qualities are qualities to be revered. Being " progressive" and looking out for individual rights is what helped give women the right to vote and blacks civil rights. Who could argue with these things?

As for the difference between conservative and liberal, I see conservatives as accepting the status quo and liberals as wanting to bring about change. Although I tend to lean left, I can't say that I'm totally one or the other. Some times the status quo is good and sometimes it isn't. It all depends on the issue.

That's the problem/virtue of individuality........It doesn't always fit the mold.

P.S. If it were my dictionary I might define liberal differently.....But then I guess that comes as no surprise....

That's the problem.. Traditional "Liberals" are fine..it's today's FAR left, frankly Socialists, that have hijacked the Term, same with Conservatives..the bases of both sides have been left behind by the fringes. as time foes on, things will progress until there really WILL end up being a true 3rd party, with all of the Moderates that are steadily being alienated by the extremes of both parties.

Thats the problem when you try to place values and views on a sliding scale; someone has to call you something. Left leaning, ultra conservative? How about we judge things individually on their merits? Now thats a concept.

I agree with this and can't wait. Give me someone in the middle who can work with both sides to get things done. Wouldn't that be nice?

Better yet, let's disband both parties so people can focus on the issues and vote for people who have the same stance on said issues, rather than vote for their "team" no matter how bad their candidate is. I have an uncle who if you gave him a ballot with - Abraham Lincoln - Rep and Adolph Hitler - Dem, he would vote for Hitler without even noticing since all he woud notice is the "Dem."

I agree with that as well.

During the last election there was a website that basically put both Kerry and Bush's views and you picked the views without knowing which one was which. It was funny how few people I knew voted for the one they agreed with.

I think getting rid of the current party system would get higher quality people running as well. To get elected by one of these parties you have to sacrifice too much of who you are and the solid ones just dont want to do it.

Ditto. I don't know where I would fit on the spectrum, there is not a category for me. I believe in free health care, legalization of drugs, and support many cases the ACLU files. I would also be for the death penalty for any type of stealing greater than shoplifting. Where would I fit in? Part of me is super left wing, part super right. Depends on the issue.

I don't think there is a category for you in America. I think it's safe to say you are genuinely uncategorized.

And I thought cutting off people's hands for theft was extreme!!!

It's the partisnaship that's killing us. there's NO middle ground anymore, and certainly no more civility. Reagan and Tip O'neill during business hours were pretty much diametrically opposed on most issues..but when the bel sounded at the end of the day they remained friends. Now, it's who can impune the other side more effectively, and try to discredit them personally, rather than address the issues at hand.

I like this idea. I like it a lot.
For every one hundred men you send us,
Ten should not even be here.
                        Eighty are nothing but targets.
                        Nine of them are real fighters;
We are lucky to have them, they the battle make.
Ah, but the one. One of them is a warrior.
And he will bring the others back.

No, he's saying that some people will vote the party line no matter WHO has that particular designation... part of me wants to believe that this was just a little sarcasm..but im cynical enough to really think you were serious with that question.
