    Using Barack Obama's Middle Name

Using Barack Obama's middle name, Hussein, sounds "like a rallying cry for bigots."

No, that didn't come from anyone in the Barack Obama camp. Nor did it come from any liberal pundit defending him. It actually came from someone many liberals consider akin to Darth Vader - Karl Rove.

"According to an online report by Marc Ambinder, associate editor of the Atlantic, Rove cautioned a private gathering of Republican state executive directors last month that 'Barack Hussein Obama' would sound like a rallying cry for bigots." (He also said it "would perpetuate the notion that Republicans were bigoted and would hurt the party.')

But as Eric Zorn of The Chicago Tribune's "Change of Subject" blog writes, there are still some conservatives who seem determined to use his middle name. Bill Cunningham we know about. But Anne Coulter goes even farther, saying that she likes to call him B. Hussein Obama because she thinks it's "funny."

But Zorn points out one man who didn't use Obama's middle name, even while he threw everything else in the book at him - Alan Keyes, Obama's opponent in his 2004 Senate battle in Illinois.

Keyes, the banty Republican imported from Maryland to heap invective on Obama, seemed to have few limits. He called his opponent a "hard-line Marxist" and a supporter of infanticide. He said Obama was "absolutely determined to make the world safe for criminals" and openly doubted Obama's Christian faith. But he never publicly snarled the words "Barack Hussein Obama."

"We warned him away from using the middle name," replied Bill Pascoe, Keyes' former campaign manager, when I checked with him to see if my colleagues and I had missed something when coming up empty after plumbing our memories and the news archives. Pascoe told me he and former top Keyes consultant Dan Proft had steered him away with the admonishment that such a gambit would be "rude, uncivil, needlessly provocative and incendiary."

Political discourse seems to have hit an all new low. Why does the far right continue to try and use the Obama-Osama and "Barack Hussein Obama" word associations to attack Obama? I think that this is the most inane and moronic political argument that I have ever heard. Can the right-wingers please come up with a better argument than "he has a funny name that sounds like a terrorist?"

I agree, with the caveat that it's not all right-wingers.

Apparently, it is the man's name though. The BHO stuff I considered the same as in referring to HRC - just pedantic, really. No connotation for me.

But I'd wish it would go away. There are PLENTY of real reasons to disagree with that guy based on other, more concrete reasons.
For every one hundred men you send us,
Ten should not even be here.
        Eighty are nothing but targets.
        Nine of them are real fighters;
We are lucky to have them, they the battle make.
Ah, but the one. One of them is a warrior.
And he will bring the others back.

I can't recall ever saying it personally, but it's a joke. Let's go back to kindergarten and tell the teacher because the other kids are teasing.

While we're pontificating, perhaps we should ask why the first person to aldulterize his name, was the man himself.

"Barry" Hussein Obama (not Osama) has had no less than 6 aliases, before anyone ever heard of him.

            Why?

He is who he is and is what he is. A terrorist sympathizer and deeply fraternal compatriot with Ayers.

As to his name? It's his name.

"Words? Just WORDS!" as the man said.

But it is not being used as a joke, it is a pathetic attempt by some right-wingers to associate Obama with arab terrorists. It is kind of pathetic really.

How does Obama calling himself "Barry" justify these stupid attempts to associate him with arab terrorists?

How is he a terrorist sympathizer? Can you back up your assertion with evidence?

Also, do you have evidence that Obama is a "deeply fraternal compatriot with Ayers"? Has Obama ever endorsed Ayers' criminal actions?

The sad thing is that many voters are so uninformed that they believe these baseless accusations and rumors about Obama.

Go back and reread some of your own posts then come back and whine about political discourse.
Big deal, Karl Rove 'cautions' republicans all the time about this or that due to the left wing media always trying to associate conservatives as being bigoted or racist, nothing new. Rove is playing the game like just like the other side is does. You don't think that Michelle has been 'cautioned', thats why she hasn't been running her mouth lately. I actually think people give Rove more credit that he deserves regarding election wins.

The problem here is that the ones who ARE using it are the NOBODIES...name ONE mainstream Conservative Talks Ahow Host who does that, and who has NOT Berated callers who DO. Bill Cunningham?? Please he's a nobody who's ****ed that he got spanked for doing it in public. The ONLY people that are seriously doing the "Hussein" dance are the Republican Equivalent of the Democratic Underground crowd.

Apparenty, he's associated himself with an unrepentant domestic terrorist, hasn't he. No need to bring 'arab' into it

All that does is show the power of that talk show host to get a lot of people to believe by implication that Obama is a Muslim terrorist.

The more "nobodies" who repeat it the more damage it does. After all, U.S. elections are...ummm...the vast majority of people who vote are "nobodies."

Why don't you look up Obamas domestic terrorist friend on that Snopes you were talking about.

                            A. Same dribble coming from Dims and their news outlets (NPR).....

                            B. Dims seem to have all kinds of cute names for W., Chenny, and several other Repubs.....but go off the deep end when you use B. Hussein Obama II as his name (and the last time I checked, that is his name).....

                            C. Terrorist sympathizer...? Get real Big Patty.....perhaps you need to google the name "William 'Bill' Ayers" and see what his affliation to B. Hussein Obama II was/is....?
