Great email I had sent to me...I'm curious if Leno really wrote/said this, but even if not, the points all hammer the nail on the head.
Thought it seemed appropriate in this forum, since it's mainly political:

JAY LENO..." HITS THE NAIL ON THE HEAD"

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What we are so unhappy about?''

Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after

9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?

The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?

Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.

They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then, the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells , and when criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

According to Snopes, it was Craig R. Smith rather than Leno, but it's pretty good anyway.

i doubt leno would gloss over all the probelms we have in this country in such a dismissive way.

This country is the greatest country in the world, in virtually all respects. That said, there is nothing wrong, in fact it would be unpatriotic to be complacent and let problems and issues that we do have go unaddressed.

      Just my two cents.

The author makes a lot of good points, but also says a lot that I cannot agree with. Overall I think the guy is trying be a political sycophant.

Why does he have a problem with people wanting to make things better?

I think the point is that 'it ain't all that bad' in the first place and be happy with what you've got, could be (and has been) a helluva lot worse.

Nothing wrong with wanting better but also good to point out how fortunate we are as I think the topic speaks of this country. As for Bush, I dont agree with every decision he makes though I agree with many of his decisions. I do feel he is a good man and a man of morale values to include his first lady. I appreciate them bringing dignity back to the Whitehouse versus the scum that occupied it before to include the previous first lady running now. Too many people have given the Clinton's a pass on all they destroyed.

It wouldn't be a civil rights thread without you showing how contrary you can be. I don't know what school you go to, but if your professors all expect opposition for oppositions sake, you'll do well. You have rarely said how you you would make "things better." You do seem to think that you are the only one who has an original thought, we just haven't heard it yet.
By the way, how have you been negatively impacted by all of these evil things?

Apparently I have made you mad Jerry. Boo hoo someone makes contrary remarks and big bad Jerry needs to jump in and be the protector.
If my comments make you so irate maybe you should put me on your ignore list.

MDS- Agreed it is not horrible, but I think there is a lot more internal problems that we need to fix. I think Bush had a good idea with his "No child left behind" act and if he would encourage more programs like this I would be a lot happier. We have a great country, but it requires constant work to keep it that way. I do not believe we will ever be at a point where we can sit back and coast.

Specifically.. no child left behind was written mostly by SEN. Kennedy, and has been a disaster to schools all across this country. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are some kids who just aren't smart enough to keep up with the rest of the class. So, the gov't in all it's wisdom decides the class needs to slow down and wait for them to catch up. I know this is true because my daughter and niece are in the same school district at different schools. They have the same curriculum but by the end of the year they will have finished at different levels in various subjects because certain kids in their class couldn't keep up.

Unlike others there I have a solution. Force those kids into classes which will specifically deal with subjects they are having problems with and keep them in their regular class for the subjects they are doing fine with.
A Veteran is someone who at one point in their life wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America, for an amount up to, and including their life. That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact!

Jerry- Just cause someone does not agree with you does not make their arguements bad. And yes I "boo hoo" you.

Ray- No Child Left Behind was a pretty crappy example of a social program meant to help the people, but it was one of the programs I could think of at the time that Bush supported. I agree it needs a lot of work, but the hope that it helps kids learn makes it a program that I am willing to support.

Trying not to knock my own thread off track but; We arrested a guy the other day with marijuana, crack and ecstasy. When we sat in the jail, he got mad and blurted out, 'It's all cause of Bush!' Good Lord. I couldn't stop laughing and looked at our drug agent...'It's always Bushs fault!'. He laughed and said 'It's cause they got nothing else.'

Allll time time isn't it? From the disaster in Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama, to the punk getting arrested for dope. Un. Freakin. Real.

While I don't agree with everything our President has done, I still approve of him. I think wiretaps are great (no one has the time and money to sit and listen to Joe Blow's conversation; no one cares, so quit playing the privacy card), I think he's done a great job in that another terrorist attack hasn't occurred but I don't like how immigration has been handled. But, that's been ongoing for who knows how long? It's not a phenomenon that popped up during Bush's reign.

Oh, and the economy is in better shape than when Slick Willie was in.

I have a BIG problem with HOW liberals always want to make things better. Examples: Someone (especially a kid) gets shot. Liberals reaction: LET'S BAN ALL GUNS!!!!! That will make things better!!!! [actual result: only criminals have guns and lawabiding citizens are ripe for the picking]. Another: Global warming. Liberals reaction: LET'S DO SOMEOTHING NOW! Get rid of all incandescent bulbs. Buy only flourescent bulbs!!!!! [actual result: the mercury in the bulbs thrown into landfills seep into the ground water and resurface into the environment killing all kinds of wildlife and eventually lead to birthdefects and deaths.] Etc. Etc......
