Ok i'm coming up on a year on the street.....I'm getting fat. I want to get back in shape. I don't have trouble motivating to work out, but I need help with a quick, easy, and cheap diet. Any ideas?

That sounds like a Jake LaLane rule. His two biggest were: "If it tastes good, spit it out. If a man made it, don't eat it."
Ancient as he is he can still perform miracle feats of fitness, so there's some merit to your words, Glock.
For the OP, what worked best for me was to keep a dietary intake journal - fat/protein/carb/fiber grams, plus overall Kcal's per day. After a while, you get to see what's going in on a daily basis, so it is easier to modify a little here, a little there, and trim a huge amount of incoming/unexpended energy. Just an idea, but a helpful one, as you can shortly visualize what your dietary habits are in hard numbers and then adjust to hard numbers - and as a result develop healthy habits/food balances.
Yes, it takes work and commitment, but so do most good things.Last edited by Nessmuk; 11-06-2009, 10:38 PM.The opinions expressed here are from the individual only and do not represent the view of any agency that the poster may be affiliated withComment

Why do you say no legumes and no grains?
Legumes are high in protein and fiber. Fiber being great at quenching hunger.
Some grains are good for you... brown rice, oatmeal, bran...Comment

I have followed the Paleo Diet for almost two years now. The answer most commonly given goes like this:
Beans have been touted as the healthy protein alternative to meat. The fact that they can cause gastrointestinal distress should be enough for our concern. Most legumes are poisonous if eaten raw. Legumes are high in lectins, protease inhibitors, and phytates. Lectins are proteins that bind carbohydrates, been identified as being inflammatory and toxic, and have a casual relationship with auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Type I diabetes, and lupus. Phytates or phytic acids, have been shown to inhibit the absorption of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc in the digestive tract. Furthermore, the presence of protease inhibitors interferes with the breakdown of proteins into amino acids. Vegetarians seeking protein from legumes, may actually be making their protein deficiencies worse! A diet high in legumes, at best, will give you gastrointestinal problems and could result in a mineral deficiency. At worst, a diet high in legumes could induce an "auto-immune" response. Furthermore, the soy industry has been pushing the "health benefits" of soy. As a result, most of our processed foods contain a soy additive or byproduct, in effect, lacing our foods with possible toxins.Comment
