  • jwise,

As someone who is old, but new to AR-15's, I greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication you have put into this post. I read, reread, and then read a couple more times the entire post. Trying to catch up with the rest of you all who are familiar with AR's.

After reading all of the material many times, I had my heart set on purchasing a CMMG upper and lower. Although I was going to ask about some of the options I wasn't so clear on. I did have a good understanding of the basic system I was going to order.

Unfortunately, when I was ready to order I went to the CMMG website and discovered they were all out of the parts you recommended. By the way this was last Sunday, but it took until today before I was allowed to post.

So, here I am, a man without a AR-15. What do you recommend? I realize they are in great demand and it might be awhile before they're in stock. Any back channels I can try? Or are there any other options.

Thank you very kindly for all of your knowledge and posts.

    • I would recommend first and foremost that you get a lower receiver, if you are at all concerned about potential changes in the law due to the current political climate (personally, I fear something worse than an "assault" weapon ban: ammo tax.)

Once you have your lower receiver, you will feel a lot better and won't be so anxious. Anxious buyers make poor decisions, so I want you to put that aside. Once you've got a lower, you can pick out any upper you find online for the right price.

If CMMG is out of stock on the upper you want, I'd suggest you look at LMT first.

Like jwise recommended get a lower now. I ordered a complete lower from CMMG last Thurs. Was told they were on backorder no idea when they'd be shipped. Turned out I got it 5 days from the day I ordered it. Order a complete lower cause the stripped lowers ain't gonna happen for a while.

          • Thanks everybody, I greatly appreciate your help.

I went to CMMGs' website and they no longer have any info about the complete lowers. So my question is, in great detail, when ordering the complete lower unit, what should I ask for? I'll send them an order form with this information and hope for the best.

            Thank you for your help.

                      • Here's what I'd get:

CMMG Semi-Auto Lower Receiver w/Internals and Stock (BS-5 5 position Carbine stock, Standard Buffer, Standard Endplate, A2 Pistol Grip,Gapper)

The only upgrade I'd opt for would be the Gapper, but that's only if you plan to stick with the stock pistol grip and stock trigger guard (which is what I've selected here.) Certain pistol grips have a built-in "gapper" and the aftermarket trigger guards do the same.

No- The gapper fills in that little space created by the hinged trigger guard and the A2 pistol grip. Carry your rifle for an extended range session, or through a rifle competition, and the inside of your middle finger will be sore as hell from it for a while. For what used to be $2, it was well worth it. All my rifles have one installed.

                            • Thanks again jwise! I didn't know about the wedge until it was mentioned in the 6.8 thread last year. In fact when I ordered my lower with the wedge I was thinking where the hell does it go. Fortunately it was in place when the lower arrived or I might still be fiddling with it.

Tomorrow I plan on ordering the complete upper (per jwise recommendation). Below is the link to CMMGs' complete upper page. Would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction as to which one to order. I would like the one described by jwise on page one of this post, but can't seem to find it on the CMMG website today.

Thanks for all of your help.
