  • I would like to know everyone's feeling on billited upper/lower vs. forged upper/lower..... there is a gunmaker in Oklahoma really making some wake with their firearms! This isn't some over priced " Red Jacket/ Sons of Gun" gun shop this is a LEO gun shop!!! Their prices for what you get I find very reasonable and the highest of quality!

Ok back to the question at hand would you rather have a name brand forged gun or a billet machined 7075-T6 gun? I would like to know the pro/con of what everyone thinks between the two.

Check these guys out they are VERY Pro-Police www.lokiweaponsystems.com
Go home at the end of every shift....PERIOD!

    • Reedo; Ive seen that video before, didnt know that was Surf's channel. I think I will be taking mine to get done by a gunsmith for two reasons. First of all I dont have the tools to do it and second because I dont want to screw it up. Im sure I can find someone to do it for me, maybe JWISE, he stays here in Houston.

      • Well everything is here and put together:

        Some gratuitous gun porn:

It shoots like a dream. I was able to pick up a CMMG 22 conversion kit with 1 magazine for $135 too, and it works great as well. Still looking at lights and eotechs, but I feel they're coming soon.

Jwise, if you are still looking for specific photos, let me know and I can send some to you.

        • Major G - Liking your system a lot. Is that a Daniel Defense free float??? Im thinking of parting / building my own AR15 next. Pretty much have boiled it down to BCM upper and lower, Magpul furniture, either a Larue (which is pretty expensive), Daniel Defense (which I havent research much yet) or Yankee Hill (which I have on my first AR) free float. Either Magpul or Larue (Troy) flip ups, Magpul AFG (ive gotten to handle an AR with this on and really like the feel of it), Tac light I havent made my mine yet, but more than likely a Larue light mount (really liking Larue's quick detach systems). And last but not least EO Tech optic, more than likely the XSP 2-0, small, compact, elevated battery compartment.

          • It is a Daniel Defense Omega rail, which is free float. Very easy to install, and requires no modification to the rifle. I also chose it because it is narrower and has more of an oval shape than most rails.

How easy is it to install? Do you have experience, or any special tools? I'm only asking because I will be getting a free float rail for my AR soon and would prefer to do it myself if it's "reasonably" easy.

                • I'll get pics later, but I just finished the base of my AR15 M4 platform with a DPMS mid-length upper in 556, chrome lined barrel, standard bird cage flash hider, fixed front sight base, pop-up rear sight, and quad rail floating hand guard with 3 point sling. That is all for now. Gonna go break it in tomorrow. Next is optics. I'm not sure if it will be a holo sight, red/green dot, or what.

I was reading up on it, its really lightweight, but I read that the 12" rail is meant for carbine gas system. If I were to remove the A2 sight and place a low profile gas block, would the 12" rail cover up the gas block on a mid - length gas system??? Anyone??

Nevermind I just saw that they make a mid length one as well, took me a while to find it. Do they make a low profile gas block incase I wanted to remove the A2 and go with a flip up??

Not all free floats are the same, as some require removing the FSB, or changing out the barrel nut etc. The DD Omega goes on with no modification required. I put it in in under 5 minutes with a screwdriver and the included allen wrench. I have no specialized experience other than having worked with tools and mechanical things since I was very young. This rail you could not mess up if you tried.

The 12.0 FSP models will fit carbine gas systems with the A2 FSP, as they are designed with cutouts to accommodate the FSP. The 12.0 FSP midlength has those cutouts for the FSP at the end instead of in the middle. For a solid continuous rail in the 12.0 model, you do need a low-profile gas black. It's actually going to be easier to take your FSP and shave it. Surf made a video under his Youtube name, "SSDSurf", on how to do it. Otherwise, you will have some issues to deal with. A2 FSPs are pinned on the bottom with two pins. DD low-profile gas blocks have a single pin in the top. As a result.you will need to drill the barrel to accomodate. Or, you can get an aftermarket and dimple the bottom of the barrel. Clamp-on models are discouraged. So basically, it'll just be easier to shave the FSP.

                            • Getting started / thread questions

Wonderful thread...truly epic thread... so much no-nonsense, brass tacks info in one place with (almost) no posturing!
Thank you Jwise, Surf and many others for not only generously sharing expertise but doing so clearly and without pretension or attitude. A rare thing anywhere.

Over the last few weeks i've read through the first 28 page (and the last 10) ... 800 posts or so...
obviously theirs still over 1000 i haven't read (yet) so my questions might be answered somewhere i haven't got to, but i think i've put in enough due diligence to start asking a few questions. Hopefully you don't mind a few more from a n00b, and if you have answered these here or somewhere, feel free to just point be to the existing thread / post

First a couple general questions on this thread....for jwise or anyone who can answer:
in posts, #5 (and other places) you refer to a chart
"Here is the BIG CHART. It shows what all the different manufacturers include in their standard offerings, and what they offer as upgrades."
but..um.. i don't _see_ a chart anywhere. did i miss it? Do i have to have special permissions to see it?
is the link simply out of date? or ruffle too many feathers? is this still up somewhere?

                              Second
                              in post #17, #18 & #20
in between the original break down of parts, and brand specific recommendations their is an illustrated guide to... something clearly dismantling the M4 down to BCG.. but to what end?...again i seem to missing post / picture / context about what the end goal of this is. Or is it simply how to dismantle the AR?

Lastly (for now) I noticed some discussion of a stiff break in period with zeplin's Ar #465... and have seen a friend have similar experiences... as someone who hopes to be working out a new new build in the next month or so...i'm wondering is their a spot in this thread, another thread, or could we start one, about Break in period, do's and dont's for a new AR

                              more Q's to come

                              Thanks in advance.

                              • Just placed an order for an EoTech XPS2-0 from www.cheaperthandirt.com Was $429 as compared to $479 anywhere else and they had it in stock. Now the wait begins, damn holiday weekend only makes the wait longer. My wife thinks I'm a 5 year old that's a week away from getting his christmas present with no patience for it... Go figure.
