Any Agency issuing these, full or compact, to all of their members, or just those on special duty?

I am NOT a gun-guy, but my Force is FINALLY looking to replace its current sidearm, the S&W 5946 (I received mine mid-1995), which is STILL in service (compact, and full-size black with no-mag-trigger-block defeated, for special duties) - PLEASE stop laughing! We had the S&W Model 10 .38 Spl 5" barrel, plus compact for special duty, before that (1970 (?) - got issued mine late 1975). Rumours are that the above is a strong contender.

I NEVER WAS, and still am in NO, in a position to influence acquisiton decisions, but am hopeful those still in the saddle get a better gatt soon.

    Thanks

My department is relaxed when it comes to firearms as long as it's 9mm or larger and we qualify. I have a PDP FS 4.5" with a Holosun red dot. It's one of the best shooters, I've ever owner.

We also have a range of weapons, although most carry the G17.

Both solid choices in their day for duty sidearms.

We carry (almost) whatever we want, but we have to buy it, so unlikely we will move to an issued sidearm anytime soon.

I haven’t heard of any departments in the US issuing anything Walther. Glock and Sig have probably 80% of the market here.

It is possible that the FN 509 MRD-LE is in the running as well.

Nothing wrong with your 5946, Pete. Granted, it's a bit long inthe tooth and heavier than it could be, but so am I.

Back on point, some U.S. law enforcement agencies have adopted Walther, usually the PPQ M2. The largest is Brevard County with about 900 sworn. The larger version (M5) as I recall is used by their SWAT team. It is also favored by Bill Blowers of Tap Rack Tactical, retired SWAT and pretty well respected in the training world. I haven't heard anything negative about the current crop of Walther.

The FN 509 MRD-LE is new issue at LAPD which, I'm sure, did extensive testing. While LAPD doesn't replace previous issue weapons when they adopt a new one, I'm sure we'll see street results before long.

The 509 replaced the previous FNS series, hopefully with significant improvements. My former employer was one of four agencies (that I could find) that issued the FNS. All four departments carry Glock now. The FNS, while it had great ergonomics, proved unreliable for us. To FN America's credit, they were very responsive and correctly many of the issues by replacing barrels and magazines.

Good luck nd be safe. Keep us updated.
