  • Anyone carrying a 10mm on duty?

Is anyone carrying a 10mm on duty? I am just curious. I know it is a very expensive caliber if you don't reload, but it gives a nice "punch" too. After "retiring" at the FBI I was wondering if there are any departments who still allow their officers too carry 10mm.

Here in Middle Georgia, I have a friend that is carring on duty (a Glock). He is a Sgt. and firearms instructor for Putnam county. I believe that they will let you carry what ever you qualify with. While qualifing with them, I over heard several of the dupeties talking about carring the Glock 10mm.
Live everyday as if it is your Last! Because someday you will be right.

Everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the mouth.

Our Dept allows them and there are a few who carry. I hear it is a good choice due to the ability to punch thru cover and such. Never carried or shot one tho

My department allows it, but the last officer to carry one retired a few years back. He carried a blued Colt Delta Elite.

The one gun that has gone by the wayside and got a bad rap that was outstanding for penetration and trauma on the human body was the 10mm. The problem was they downloaded the rounds to make them user friendly and the rounds didn't work well in some of the Smith mags. Go back and read up on the FBI testing results back in the late 80's early 90's to see how effective the 10mm really was. I still think the Best Combat Pistol Glock has ever made is the Glock 20. Personally I stand behind the 45acp when I cant get to a shotgun.

Putting a person in a cage when they don't wanna go is not for everyone and that is ok but back off judging how we do it. It's only a job but we will do what we need to do to go home at tour end.

As they hamstringed the 10mm, the industry was also improving the .40 S&W, so the less feed reliable 10mm became a moot point for many shooters.

In full house loads (I like Cor-Bon) the 10mm is an excellent round. I used to carry a Glock, and remember one instance I had shooting it side-by-side with a partners Glock 21. There was no doubt that the 10mm was a magnum-esque round.

I heard there was a run of MP-5's in 10mm...I think those would be awesome.

The 10mm is an authorized caliber in our department. Currently we have only one guy carrying it. He carrys the S&W 1006. You can always pick him out at the range. The things sounds like a cannon going off next to all those .40's.

So there are actually a few departments that still allow the 10mm to be carried, and within that departments even a few that carry the round (most in Alaska?). Interesting.
And SRT, that's really funny, that you can pick the 10mm out on the range

I carry a glock 20 concealed as a law abiding citizen. I work as a correctional officer and have had my life threatened. I live in a state where a 2 time murder can parole out after 7 years so anything is possible. I like my 10mm because I can take it to the forest and fell comfortable with its stopping power with cor bon hunting loads.

Isn't the G29 easier to conceal? I think the G20 is a terrific gun, however a little large if used for CCW.

The G20 ROCKS! But I hate the price and somewhat lack of availability of ammo.

A former co-worker of mine was HUGE into 10mm handguns. I got to shoot his Glock 20 with a 6" Bar-Sto barrel. Supposedly the 6" barrel gives the 10mm even MORE power due to the increase in velocity. I know it kicked, and it was loud, and I know it was accurate (in my hands, my co-worker couldn't group to save his life.)

It's plenty accurate in capable hands. I qualified well with one. But in the end, the ammo is not as readily available overall, and I still shoot the G21 a bit better. Especially doing one-hand drills, both weak and strong hand. And I don't see the point in carrying anything less than the higher power loads. May as well be carrying .40 otherwise. Put it to you this way: full power loads in the weak hand means much slower ACCURATE follow up shots. Don't get me wrong, it's a heck of a hand cannon as far as auto-loaders go. But even for my big handed self, the .45 is better overall for serious work in the long run. Although, the 10 is better in the woods with large critters (if you have the right load).
