sound suppressor...?

Ok...I'm sure I'm going to get bashed a little for these questions...and I'm sure some of you will say civilians don't need these...but I'm not going to use it for illegal purposes...and I'm sure this answer isn't the most mature...but I think it would be cool to have a suppressed handgun... So please correct me if I'm wrong on these points...and as always, feel free to present opinions

1. anyone who can legally possess a firearm under federal laws can have a class 3 weapon transfered to them? on a BATF form 5320.4. (as long as your state permits...texas being a free state, woohoo!)

2. though new machine guns can not be modified and registered with NFA due to the assault ban of 86....sound suppressors can still be made and sold?? and or fitted to specific applications on firearms?

3. All i have to do is fill out and submit two forms to the BATF. attach a 2x2 picture of myself to the form, and submit two sets of prints (the same basic CCW procedures?)?

4. The form must be signed by a Cheif LEO such as a Cheif of Police, Sheriff, DA, or a district judge? (is this going to be a pain in the a**?)

5. A $200 transfer fee is paid per class 3 weapon?

anything else I've missed?? thanks for any and all advice...as always, it's appreciated

I think you would be better off asking the BATF themselves. Laws change from time to time and regulations even more often.

Sounds like you have it pretty close. I would suggest that you contact the company that you'll be purchasing the supressor from, they typically have all the detailes and paperwork on hand to send you, as they will not ship until you receive the license from the ATF. Its not a short process and the hardest part will be the local chief of police. Heck I'm an federal LEO and it wasnt easy. I am in the process of obtaining one for a 22 cal pistol.

You are very close - any Class 3 Dealer will have the forms, prices, and most important, who will sign off the Form 4 for you.

Good luck with that. I have had my form 4 returned to me with a nice hand written note reading: "the Chief does not sign requests of this nature for anyone; officers or citizens."

Jwise, ATF has a list of acceptable alternatives - DA, certain judges, county sherriff, etc. Check with them.

The first thing you need to do is check to make sure that it is legal in your state. If not, the ATF will not approve.

Yes, you can make one if you have the skills on a "Form 1". First you apply and get approved. Then you make your suppressor. Then you put the serial number on it that you have written in on your paperwork.

Its not a big deal. I made one for my .300 Whisper AR-15. It works great.

Yes. You must now sigh a citizenship form swearing that you are a citizen of the United States.
You submit everything in duplicate. One of the forms they will keep on file. The other form, known as the "tax stamp" must go with the gun wherever it goes.

How is that 300 Whisper? I've always found it a neat caliber but have never had the chance to shoot one. How it the sound with it canned(not the bullet but the gun itself)?

I made one for my .300 Whisper AR-15. It works great.

It is very accurate. I shoot 220 grain Sierra Match bullets at 1050 FPS.
I've had 5 shot 3/4" groups at 100 yards with it.

As for quiteness...its pretty quiet. As a comparison, it was tested with a sound meter last summer. A Red Rider BB gun registers 99 decipals. The suppressed .300 was 98.

Its quite enough that my Peltor Tactical Muffs wont shut off for it. The loudest sound is the bolt cycle and the brass hitting the concrete. I've got about a 5 second video clip of it but cant post it here.

The can is has 316 SS baffles and a dual mount. It mounts on the threaded barrel and had a collet attachment that grips the barrel right at the front sight.This makes for zero misalignment and the mount is very rigid.

Im considering makeing an accurized Rem.700 bolt for my next project.That would be the ultimate quiet gun, as there would be no action noise.

The quietest gun I have ever fired was a 788 in .44MAG with a supressor. All you could hear was the click of the firing pin, and then the round striking the target 100 yards away!
