I was just wondering who all carries a 1911 on duty and why you chose to. If so, what manufacture and model do you carry and what holster do you use. Also, what do you carry for a BUG (if anything) or for off-duty carry. And last but not least, what ammo do you carry on duty. I'm just trying to get an idea of whats out there because I know the 1911 is not the most common duty gun seen on the streets, like a Glock or a Sig, so I'm just curious as to what is carried. Thanks in advance.

Have carried an Ed Brown Kobra, a USGI 1943 Colt/Rem. Rand mixer, Les Baer Super Tac and a Springfield MC operator. I now carry an H&K USP40c c&l'd.
I used Safariland 6280 and 230 grain Winchester Ranger T's. Off duty I always carry a full size 1911 and for a BUG I carry a Kahr PM9.Trooperden, akman75, & azmichelle ignored

I carry a Kimber Custom II 1911 .45 with 5" barrel. Ammunition is department issue Winchester Ranger hollow points.
Holster is your standard Don Hume with thumb break.
The 1911 is the preferred gun of my department most other officers carry them as well with a few choosing to go with glocks

During my time with the Sheriff's dept, I had the privilege of carrying a 1911 (230 Hydra Shok). The policy was flexible enough that we had a wide choice of handguns options. The primary reason I carried the 1911 was proficiency. Over the years I've shot 1000s (10s of 1000s) of 45 ACP.
I believe you should have some options when it comes to duty weapons. Particularly if the guns are officer purchased, but even so for dept issue. Simply, carry and train with the weapons that you handle/shoot the best. One gun does not "fit" all theory.
I believe we are seeing a resurgence of the 1911 in PDs and some special military units. The 1911 is arguably the finest fighting handgun ever made.
Today, I'm relegated to a Glock... county police dept policy. No options other than caliber. And contrary to what some believe, the Glock can malfunction.

Mine's a personal owned Kimber Tactical Custom II with a Colt Defender for backup/secondary/off-duty. I went through the academy with a 1911 and can't imagine carrying anything else.
I shot the office issue weapon when they forced me to, as part of the conversion from issuing the H&K P-7M-13 9mm to the H&K USP.40S&W a few years ago.
Many of our Deputies carry the USP. I's a pretty good weapon, but I'm still stuck on the 1911.I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.

The USP is OK but I am considering going back to my Springer operator. At 25 Yards the difference is 3" tighter with the Springer and close up firing as quickly as possible the Springer is more controlable. The Springer actually has less muzzle flip and felt recoil (it also weighs 40% more than the USP40c)Trooperden, akman75, & azmichelle ignored

I didn't say I carried the USP; only that I was forced to qualify with it. The thought was that if it was necessary, everyone should be able to employ the issue weapon, whether they carry one or not.
I've always carried a 1911 of one sort or another(and still do) .I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.

As an investigator, I carried a STAR PD (.45, alloy frame, short barrel). We carried 185g Federal JHP, and later 230g Hydro-Shocks."A man who has nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the existing of better men than himself."

Off-Duty a Kimber Ultra CDP
with Cor-bon 185gr Gold dots. On duty at my full time job a Steyr M9 9mm with Rangers. My Part-time job, An Issued Glock 20, 10mm also with Cor-Bon 165gr Golddots. Back-up for all is a Glock 27, .40 with Speer GoldDots. If your not confused yet, I have diffrent holsters for all.
The Kimber is mine, the rest is all issued stuff. I have tried to talk the Sheriff into letting me dump the 9mm for a G20, but so far no go. Chief at my part time job would let me carry the Steyr, but I just can't get myself to give up the 10mm.
If I had a real choice it would by my Kimber Custom Classic. Thats a shooter, and preeetttyyy. The 1911 platform is still atround for a reason, it kicks [email protected]!.
