Sig is no doubt a great piece just to much more in price for my tastes. The 5906's I have had are very durable and work well with no jams or other issues in over 15 yrs with them

We've used Sig P226's and P229's for years with absolutely zero problems. Pretty much the only malfunctions we've ever had were after we loaded inert training rounds.

If you are talking about a duty weapon I wouldn't let the price affect your decision. You can get a P226 in .40 caliber with tritium sights on it for about $650, which is certainly worth it.

I understand that some guys love their S&W's but I've heard nothing but bad things about them. At the academy range in Connecticut with recruit classes I've never seen a Sig malfunction, but the line grinds to a halt regularly to deal with malfunctioning S&W's.

I carried a 5906 as my issued duty weapon until last year when the department coverted to Sig. Love both weapons and have had no problem with either. Sig is much lighter on my hip though.

My department doesn't have it's own academy and the department where they sent my class carried Bereta. Instructors bad mouthed the Smiths constantly saying they were heavy, unreliable etc. When it came time to do jamming excercises, we had to use spent rounds instead of dummy rounds beacuse the 5906 would feed the dummys every time. Guys with Beretas had malfunctions at least once a day whereas the Smiths never did during academy training. In the 8 years I carried the 5906, I had one misfeed that wasn't intentional and that was after about 200 rounds.

I've never shot a gun more accurate than a sig (out of the box that is) but I did see multiple Sigs jam at the range after a couple hundred rounds, while I've never had a jam in my glock or seen a glock jam at the range. Of course this is due to the tighter fit in the sig that lets it be more accurate but also is more vulnerable to dirt.

But between a S&W and a sig, I'd go with a sig no doubt about it.

My Sig definitely is accurate. My scores at the range are up since we converted.
