Luckily my department allows us to carry a variety of different handguns (as long as they are on the approved weapons list) in the following calibers: .38 Special, .357 magnum, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, some officers have "grandfathered" weapons in .380, and 10mm, but the department doesn't provide ammo for them. (the .380's are authorized as back up or off duty weapons only). My department no longer issues duty weapons, so as long as they meet the criteria set forth on the approved weapons list, we get our choice...

The standard in my area seems to be .40 cal. Yes there are some 9mm and some others, but mostly 40.

S&W 5946 pistol (15 round capacity magazines) with 9 mm Ranger SXT ammunition.

Don't bother asking me why, or whether I prefer anything else...gun and ammo is issued, and I am not much of a firearm fancier. I do prefer it over our old S&W 10 revolver and 12 semi-wad cutter .38 Spl.+P ammo.

Department issues 9mm, but we can carry our own 40 or 45. I've noticed in the last few years, less 40s and more 45s. Never was a fan of the 9mm, and will stay with 45.
