Do what feels right and what becomes natural, so if you need to grab a magazine, you don't figit or have to "think" where they are located.

I carry mine vertical on the weak side. I have the Bianchi open top mag pouch. I found it to be easier and faster to change mags, but that's just IMO.

i carried horizontal strongside in uniform, mainly b/c the extra belt ran long into the weak side, and I wanted my radio lined up on the weak side pants seam... so no space to carry in the front on the weak side.

now that I mainly wear a tactical vest with a radio carrier, I carry vertical weak side ... also because thats where I carry my mags plainclothes so I've long since retrained myself that spare mags are on my weak side whether on duty, off duty, or tac'd out for warrants (I'm never in uniform, no such thing anymore, so no reason to ever go back to uniform carry)

Horizontal strong side open to the buckle.

Two 30 rounders in a drop shingle on my left thigh.

This is for callouts. For patrol I don't carry a spare on my belt. If I need a spare I dump it in my cargo pocket when I grab the rifle.

The advantage is my 20 lb. duty belt isn't any heavier when I don't have a rifle in my hand.

If I need more than one mag I probably should have grabbed my plate carrier anyway (and I do when there is a rifle threat).

Horizontal takes up too much space.

Put the magazine pouch where you feel most comfortable. Weak side seems more natural to me. In addition, loaded magazines are heavy, and having the weight on the opposite side from the weapon creates better balance.

true - but in uniform w/ a sam brown belt, i found that the horizontal mag carrier (double .45, for sw4506) hung too low and dug into my leg while seated. Plus, by horizontal strong side mag carry - i had room for OC on my weak side (in front of the radio) so the extra belt could thread through the holder, and that way I used weak hand for OC and kept strong hand free to escalate

but as posted above, carry it however it works for you (OP) / feels comfortable.

throughout the academy I tried mine both ways horo/vertical and found that I had more free space w/it vertical. Also it was a HUGE PITA to grab a new mag w/the patrol-car seatbelt on (hopefully you would have it off before anything bad happens) due to the belt covering the mag carrier flaps/opening

Because of a lack of room on my belt with 2 cuff cases, radio, taser, baton and sidearm, I carry my reloads in the strong side, horizontal. This is not my preferred way to do it, but it is practical. I carry horizontal because if I carry vertical, the bottom of the mag case digs into the front of my pelvic area.
