I have seen mention in print of using the EIGHT shot 357 N frame smith as a shield gun, with the reload being another similar revolver.

The only thing I can suggest is that you go to maybe some of the other specific gun and shooting forums made up of people who shoot competition like Defensive Carry.com
I used to shoot competition bullseye" courses with my late father and I still have the SW 686 I used then and as far as I know it's a common model for competition. The extra 7 shot would just give you a slight advantage.
Off topic, I use revolvers often for off duty carry and target shooting though I don't shoot competition anymore.

I've heard of some of the salty old dogs here in LV that are still around and carry wheel guns but haven't seen one of em yet.

Our dept allows us to carry whatever we want. I carry a S&W 686+ ... 7 shot .357 and two speed loaders.

My department explicitly allows for that model to be carried as a primary duty weapon, as long as the individual deputy purchases it himself.

Does it have to be standard issue, or can it be just an "approved duty weapon?"
Or, does it have to not only be approved, but at least carried by ONE officer, SOMEWHERE in the world?

At a meeting last week the Downey PD Chief was carrying an S&W stainless revolver in uniform, but I think it probably was a model 66.
I think there are few places where the secondary agencies that are more like guards are issued hand-me-down revolvers, but I think the 7-shot 686 did not come out until the transition to autos was almost complete, and therefore is unlikely to be a standard-issue weapon anywhere.

I can't think of a single law enforcement agency in California that still issues any type of revolver as a primary duty weapon. Some might allow revolvers to be carried as personally owned/department approved options (to the issue duty weapon), but the agency I retired from isn't one of them. For the last five or six years, my department only allowed revolvers to be carried as backup weapons or for off-duty CCW purposes.

S&W 686P 7 shot in official use?
Hi,
is this revolver in official use in any LE department in the US? I am member of a german shooting association ( Association of military and police shooters ) for offduty shooting sport - there all weapons are allowed which are in official use in any police department around the world.
On duty I carry a Walther P99. I also have a Kimber 1911 in .45 for sport shooting. Now I could get a 686P for a good price. But I would like to know if there are any police officers in the US who carry the 686P.
