Why is Ammo so expensive?

So I've been biding my time on when to buy ammo. Seems like it's coming down in price in the last month or so but, what gives? I could buy 50 Rds of 40 S&W for about $13.00 a year ago, but now it's $25 per box?

So what's your take?

I've heard that it's the "Obama Scare" thinking that there will be new bans and therefore the ammo companies have limited production therefore driving up prices?

I've heard that Goverment LEO's have more demand and less demand for others?

Or is it a mix of things?

Its a combination of things giving us this perfect storm.

Obama scare is a very large reason but also remember that we have more shooters today then 10 years ago. The AWB had a disasterous affect on gun control as it introduced an incredible amount of new shooters.

The last problem is the gun industry is not increasing production as they feel that this boom will be short lived.

I don't know how long this will last but like anything it has to have a breaking point somewhere.

Small civilian supply, and inadequate manufacturing capacity, due to military using a lot of ammo these days. There is a reluctance to expand capacity because military may wind down. I also suspect that building a new ammo plant may be difficult because of current environmental and safety regulations. The plants have a tendency to blow up.

Big civilian demand due to panic over the Democrats being in control.

Price of any item is exactly what people will pay for it. Price goes up people still buy it, price goes higher till people stop buying, price goes down till they buy it again.

so everyone needs to stop buying it at these ridiculous prices. if people would stop buying 45 ammo at $50 for box of 50 the price will drop back down to reasonable prices.

It will never work, we don't organize. Look at gas.

Gas is cheap, in 1977 gas was $1/gal, my car got 10mpg, now gas is $3 and my car get's 30mpg. Same amount spent on gas. My house costs way more than 3X over last 30yrs, my car way over 3X but gas cost's the same.

Yea, I buy ammo in bulk when I see it cheap. It lasted me about a year before I started looking at prices again.
