  • CMP M1 Garands?

Has anybody has experience with ordering M1 Garands from the Civilian Marksmanship Program? Are the rifles in good condition? How long does it take to receive them after you order them? For the prices they charge it looks like an awesome deal, I am just curious about others' experiences of ordering from them.

i haven't bought yet, but have all my paperwork in order to send in at the current time. lots of guys over at surplusrifleforum.com have cmp rifles. might do some reading over there. from what i've read, everyone there has been more than pleased with their purchase. i'm only about 200 mi. from the anniston facility, so i'll probably go pick mine out myself.

You have to meet criteria in order to purchase a CMP rifle.
Either active duty military or competing in a minimum number of sanctioned matches.
I did not get my M1 through them, but know people that did. They are arsenal reworked M1's. It may be good to go the way you get it, or you may need to have some work done to it.
Regardless, they are still a good deal.

That sucks. Can't even get one as a cop? I shoot all the time with the department, but never any formal matches. Weak.

I got one and I'm a licensed police officer. I also have my C&R firearms license to purchase.

I'll have to look at what their requirements are.

The quality depends on what you order. They have junk to collectors grades.

            Proof of U.S. Citizenship:
You must provide a copy of a U.S. birth certificate, passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document that shows birth in the U.S. or states citizenship as U.S.

            Proof of Age:
You must provide proof of age. Usually proof of citizenship also provides proof of age. In those cases where it may not, a driver’s license is sufficient.

            Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization:
You must provide a copy of your current membership card or other proof of membership. This requirement cannot be waived. The CMP currently has over 2,000 affiliated organizations located in many parts of the country.

Membership in many of these organizations costs $25.00 or less and can be accomplished online. A listing of affiliated organizations can be found by clicking on our Club Search web page at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearch.cgi. If you have any difficulty in locating a club, please contact the CMP at 256-835-8455 or by emailing CMP Customer Service. We will find one for you. In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. These special affiliates include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees. Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc.

Note: Club membership IS required for purchase of rifles, parts, and ammunition.

Club membership is NOT required for instructional publications or videos or CMP memorabilia.

Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity:
You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

            - Current or past military service.
            - Current or past law enforcement service
            - Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
            - Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
            - Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
            - Concealed Carry License.
            - Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
            - FFL or C&R license.
            - Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
            - Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf

CMP considers membership in the FOP as "club membership." From what I read on their site all you need is your FOP card.

Yep, FOP is listed as one of their clubs.

As a police officer you ARE a member of the FOP......RIGHT?

Yes you can get one as a cop.

You can also join the Garand Collectors Assoc for $25 to meet the club criteria.

From the CMP I have a M1 Garand, a 1903A3 and an M1 Carbine. Love them all.

Here's the skinny on CMP Garands:
The condition of the rifles will vary depending on which grade you select, and condition will vary somewhat within the grades. What do you want the rifle to be for? Shooting? Strictly being a safe queen? I would go "field grade" at minimum, but most likely "service grade". The wait should be around 2-3 months right now. IMHO CMP Garand's are probably the best deal around right now. Garand's have their quirks though. M1 thumb is minor, but be aware that you MUST use M2 ball ammo (most of which is corrosive, but that is no biggie if you clean your weapon), or get an adjustable gas nut. the high pressure of modern 30-06 ammo can bend the Garand's op-rod if you shoot it without an adjustable gas nut. Regardless, M1's are my favorite rifle of all time.

I think I am going to go ahead anfd get one. I was going to go with the "service" grade. I have a question for you. How hard is it to purchase the M2 ball ammo? If I can't get that, how much is an adjustable gas nut for the Garand?

I wplan on using teh weapon for regular "plinking" typre target shooting. I like to go out in the desert and shoot stuff up, I see no use in having a weapon that I will never fire.

Thanks to all who have responded in this thread.

Just ordered my first from them, but know several guys that have ordered in the past.

The "rack" grade, is just that - probably in pretty rough shape and rebuilt a couple of times, numbers generally don't match.

Field grade and service grades are better, and are more likely to have matching numbers, but not guaranteed.

Police officers qualify, just send a copy of your ID.

Wait times are 60-90 days for delivery for an M-1. Well worth the wait.

I have a CMP garand and I love it. I ordered a rack grade I think ($525) back in 06 and have lots of the greek -06. Its accurate and fun. The clips can be purchased for cheap. Mine came with some dings but is fully functional and honestly I think the dings add charector. If you are even thinking about getting a garand I highly suggest CMP as the way to do it.
