I use Garmin Nuvis in my cars and an older GPSmap 60c for hiking. They've only been skunked a few times, usually involving addresses that are not on a standard street grid.
By township, do you mean a political subdivision or township as used in the Public Land Survey System?
In the former case, stock GPS basemaps usually don't include political boundaries below the state level. You should be able to create a map with political boundary lines using OpenStreetMap and download to your GPS.
In the latter case, there are off-the-shelf basemaps that will identify township, range, and section numbers.
Your city/county/township should have a professional engineer or GIS specialist on staff. Talk to the them about what you want and need.
