  • Marine Interdiction Agent Opening

A nationwide opening for Marine Interdiction Agent (MIA) is open now. Looks like they're trying to make a big push this year.

I would like the job, but from what I understand you either have to be current CBP or former Coast Guard, due to the operation of the boat.

If I am wrong please correct me

It's status candidates only. If you type "interdiction" in the key words, and click "yes" under applicant eligibility, they'll be the first jobs that come up.

after reading the VEOA requirements, im still a bit confused about whether i should apply as a cbp officer or VEOA applicant since i qualify as both??

                  ops

There are many PSC's doing MIO in New Orleans and many other ports. They ride the ships in and make sure no one (ships crew) leave the ship (that has been designated high risk)

They pay around 1-2 bucks more and they are armed. but, that was about 3 years ago when I worked ON SHORE at thier ports.

If the FED's have now taken that role thats a good thing.

what role are the feds taking?

                      K

PSC is private security companies. Its the new way or telling everyone apart because the fed, dod, ect are starting up their own inter agency security.

MIO is Maritime Interdiction Operations, where a ship is boarded for whatever reason and certain operation are conducted, maybe inspection, detaining, security to keep the people that are on the ship, ON the ship.

The feds are leaving it up to the Coast Guard and the Customs (ICE) and as of when I was last doing work around ports, it was contracted to PSC's to do the on ship security to make sure that ships that were red flag, their crew never left the ship.

Now , when they dock, DHS requires a PSC to maintain security on that dock and to track the crew going off and getting back on. The system is ****ed up. If Osama got off and no one knew it was him, the security would take is ID (which is from HIS home country that most have never seen before) take his name and wish him well. When the ship leaves, if he is not on it, we call???????????????? WHO????

Well I got with the Coast Guard and established contact with WHO was in charge of reporting and we give our limited info to them. They take it from there.

                      Cross your fingers.

We don't do that..... The Coast Guard conducts boarding's on deep drafts that meet certain criteria, and CBP does create requirements for private security to be placed to combat absconders, but MIA's.... um NO. Not our job.

I'm a Coast Guard Reservist, I'm about to be advanced to a Third Class Petty Officer Port Security Specialist (PS3), would my quals make me eligible for this position or do you actually have to have experience underway (coxswain, etc.)?

there isnt enough information to give an answer either way. check out the announcement and see if you meet the minimum qualifications. if you do, you will have to wait for the next announcement to open and then apply. obviously, underway time as a coxswain will place you in the right direction. these positions are highly competitive. port security specialist itself does not forward you the seamanship skills that are highly sought-after, but you can certainly get the training necessary for coxswain. at least it did for me when i was in a psu.
