    The University of Delaware Police Department is once again hiring. Detailed job requirements and description available at:

    Effective January of 2008, UDPD is now armed full-time.

    We do not have a maximum hiring age or mandatory retirement age at this time.

    The site lists starting pay at $39k during Academy and $41k after release from Field Training. Keep in mind that the FOP is presently negotiating a new contract, and these numbers may go up. After two years of successful employment, you are eligible for the rank of Master Police Officer, which comes with a pay bump and ability to move further within the agency. As with many agencies in Delaware, there is not a “Top Pay” number that anyone can give you.

    Retirement is presently 30 years with a 25-year early-out option, provided through the State of Delaware, and includes a pension and continuance of medical benefits. Previous state employment time has been known to roll over in the past. Please consult the State website for more information on the retirement system.

    Patrol division presently operates on a rotating schedule, which is a mix of 10 and 8-hour shifts; 4on-2off-4on-2off-4on-3off-3on-3off-3on-3off-3on-2off, and back to the beginning. Patrol Division is comprised of five squads of several officers and a dispatcher who rotate through the schedule together, with long blocks of overlap time on the weekends. Primary duty is by vehicle, but bike patrol is available and foot patrol is highly encouraged. Patrol Division also covers the dedicated Wilmington Campus and Library assignments.

    In addition to the Patrol Division, we have a Criminal Investigations Unit and are in the process of forming a dedicated Community Oriented Policing Unit that will be primarily bike and foot patrol.

    Recruits hired through this process will attend an Academy in the Fall of 2008, likely the Delaware State Police Academy but that is not yet certain. Upon completion of at least two years of employment, your Delaware COPT certified status would transfer to any agency in Delaware.
