You won't be able to, you'll have to travel to get it. When you EOD with BP, you EOD at the sector headquarters. The agency will then fly you (and any other new hires at your sector) to El paso and then bus you in to the academy. You would have to go get your vehicle on weekend or something. I personally bought a car while at FLETC.

Lmao I got ripped to shreds by the PT instructors when they saw my new truck with a Roswell Toyota dealership sticker. Saying what if I got hurt or didn't make it. Didn't help that I replied "well this academy isn't that hard, so I knew I'd pass."

jajaja that response though. I will say though to anyone, it is so worth it to have a vehicle. Whether you buy a 4,000 beater there and then try to sell it to someone before you leave, or take it your new station, it is a game changer, since there is absolutely nothing to do in Artesia, and Roswell isnt much better. Also might as well do it if you are going to one of those stations where people live an hour away from their station; grab a cheap used Honda Civic or Corolla so you will have your commuter car for work. Only thing that sucks is you have to drive it home after graduation, whereas the Agency would pay to fly you there otherwise.

  • So I was surfing the web trying to look up any useful information to prepare for the academy and I came across this guide. I don’t know how updated it is but it seemed to be pretty thorough and resonates with what I’ve heard to expect at the academy.

I'll walk you through Day 0.

The instructors will come on the bus and yell at you, you'll do pointless marching around pseudo-Marine Corps style. Try not to laugh if you're prior military like I was. Then you'll run around everywhere to the first building to get issued your keys and buncha useless academy books like that student handbook you got. Then you'll be dropped off way far away from your barracks and be forced to carry your bags to them. Even if your bags got wheels you'll still carry your crap.

We went up 4 flights of stairs and ran around our room buildings. Some people puked and ****, I was breathing pretty hard but not too bad. Some instructors will be yelling at you through your room window. You empty out one bag, completely empty. If there's even as much as a pencil in there you'll be forced to go back til its empty. We had 1 dude go back 4 times.

Then once everyone has their crap, they pass out more crap, and you go to bed for the night.

The instructors slowly stop yelling at you after week 1. PT instructors will still yell at you pretty much throughout the whole academy. They kinda ease up about halfway through.

  • Maybe a dumb question but where are you guys finding the percentage for how completed your process is ?

    • Is it common for them to send you for a drug test before the BI is done? They haven’t even started calling my references and I’m scheduled for a drug test tomorrow, they just called today about it.

Talonderiel no I didn’t sign it, I’ve never had a clearance so I didn’t want to leave my job then get bounced. That’s why I’m confused about it

Provisional clearances aren't limited to those who previously held them. Remember, most BP hires are not prior federal LEO or military

battlewagon no I completely understand that, what I was afraid of was quitting my current job leaving getting to the academy and then not getting cleared for whatever reason and being sent home. I have the worst luck and always expect the worst to happen, so I didn’t want to get screwed.

Ohio1994, my guess would be the relative inexpensiveness of the test is why they have ya' knocking it out. Less expensive then having a full clearance check done to then lose you to a cheaper drug test. Just my thoughts.

    • I have a question about the academy. I know that if you don’t know how to speak Spanish they teach that to you but what if like me you’re fluent in reading, writing, and speaking it? Is it still mandatory to take the classes?

Srhernza115, my buddies that have gone through it have told me there was a test-out option during the academy..... But they were 10 and 5 years ago, so it may have changed. Hopefully someone fresh from the grind will tell us!

    • Completed my drug test today. Any ideas as to how long it takes that to go through? And I know there is no telling how long but anyone recently got through the background investigation and can give some insight into how long to expect that to take to get completed?

Everyone does it now. The Spanish used to be a separate part of the academy where all you did was spanish 8 hours a day. You could test out of it. Ironically, many native speakers would fail that test especially those from say South Texas who have been speaking that particular dialect of Spanish, whereas all the white Mormons passed the test (there's a large Mormon population in the Patrol, and many of them learned Spanish for their missionary work, and learned it very well). This was because the Spanish test, done over a phone verbally, was proper book Spanish. Not "que onda guey no mames".

So yeah it's back to how it used to be a long time ago, the spanish is fully integrated into the daily training so everyone goes through it.

Another irony was that the tactical training during the old dedicated Spanish course was better, so the nativos who went straight to the stations after 12 weeks were behind the curve on things like vehicle stops, processing, checkpoint stuff, and even arrest techniques.

    • I see there’s a few others who are at about the same stage in the process as I am (awaiting background clearance and/or drug test). I saw someone here in this thread got an EOD date for FLETC for 8/15. Assuming myself and these others who are still waiting on a word do get through, does anyone know if we’d most likely EOD for that same date of 8/15? I couldn’t imagine them running two separate academies around the same time. Am I wrong in thinking that?

They not only run academies at the same time, they usually EOD a class every other week, around the clock. There have been times when a new class would EOD every week. So there can be in theory 10+ classes going at once. Someone at the academy now would have to give an exact number that they're running

Hell yeah full steam ahead. Unfortunately I've heard a lot of classes aren't at full numbers, with some EODing and having less than half the class full, low 20s. Better than nothing though!

Ohhh right up my alley. So Laredo and Zapata should be off the table no questions asked.

For both McAllen and Rio grande city under the Rio grande Valley sector, you're probably going to end up living in McAllen mission or Edinburg which are three towns just jammed against each other with no defined boundaries really. Each has a major plus and a major negative in my opinion.

McAllen station is in McAllen so your commute will be short. The negative is McAllen is a station with damn near 30 X's (meaning your 8-10 hour shift is park on that spot and not moving inch, even if there is illegal crossing nearby or even if you can see them running from your window). That number of x may have gone up or down since I left but they are still there.

Rio grande City station the big negative is the commute. From mission area where you would likely live, the commute is about 45 minutes. Edinburg area is about an hour during the day with traffic. The giant plus for RGC is it always hovers around the top three for busiest drug stations in the country, as well as top 3 for busiest alien stations, so there's tons of work. Also, the station has no border wall, just a handful of cameras and aerostats, and not much else for technology so it's definitely 'old Patrol' and wild west at times, which is a good thing.

There are a dozen other things to consider like McAllen having a bigger boat Patrol for example, so more likely to be able to get on it then the Rio grande City boat Patrol. Both have atvs and the other basic details, but McAllen has dirtbikes for example that RGC didn't have when I left (may have changed). But McAllen has a lot more BS assignments that pull you off patrol as well. Though at this point in time, everyone is off the line with the family unit situation.

You really can't go wrong with either station. If I went back to RGV tomorrow, and had to pick between McAllen and Rio grande City, I would personally pick Rio grande City despite knowing the commute everyday in your personal vehicle. But I know plenty of people who would pick McAllen. either way you're very lucky to have those two options on the table, I have quite a few people I've personally recruited from my reserve units and other places who only received falfurrias as an option for RGV in the last 6 months.

I'm sure other can chime in, good luck

Edit: sorry for all the errors, I tried to correct a few but I'm using voice text

Laredo is all of the negatives of living on the border (which isn't a lot), but none of the positives of living on the border, such as low housing costs. Real estate in Laredo, compared to the Rio grande valley might as well be California. Laredo also doesn't have much to do, is barely closer to San Antonio than RGV but 3+ more hours further from the beach and South Padre island (about an hour ten from McAllen), and worst of all, you have to live in laredo, one of the most boring cities in the planet.

But the absolute biggest negative if all is laredo west has a checkpoint, whereas RGC and MCS does not.

battlewagon see I thought just north had a checkpoint and west did not. I must of misunderstood on my research. So mission is the place to look at as far as living goes if I got with RGV

I preferred Edinburg, but the problem with Edinburg if you choose RGC is you have to take a highway junction to get home, and it gets super backed up during the rush hours. But wherever youre from, this area is probably unique in that mission, edinburg, mcallen (and other smaller cities) aren't like separated by a drive like most places. They all touch each other with very unstraight borders. you can drive 5 blocks and go through 3 city limits in some areas.

Put my call in tonight, went with rio grande as my top choice. According to google maps it’s a 30 minutes drive from mission to the station so that’s not bad at all. Now just to hope my background goes through so I can quit worrying and relax. I appreciate the help
