  • Thanks for the insight. It sounds like it's part of the regular pay though. Shouldn't they be giving you OT (1.5X) your base pay for any hours worked over 8 hours, instead of just paying regular time for the extra hours?

"Wow... I'm surprised by that. I thought OFO and BP were somewhat interconnected. But, OFO (CBP) get double time OT up to $35K/yr and some places allow up to $45K/yr. I don't see why they would give them the chance to make that kind of money and make it so much different for BP."

90% plus of OFO have no chance of making 35K per year in OT...much less 45K. The ones you find that do have the option are extreme outliers.

I hear that San Ysidro has a ton of mandatory overtime. They're even paying guys an extra 25% salary for the first three years just to accept a position there and a couple other spots.

That's true. Understand though that there are 328 ports in OFO. What you're speaking of only occurs in a handful of those 328 ports. Most locations, most Officers will never see those sorts of opportunities.

That's true, but there's a catch. San Ysidro is severely undermanned, which means a lot of mandatory 16-hour shifts to keep lanes open. That's a lot of time on the line performing customer service to consider switching to a career in law enforcement.

You can make supervisor in five years if you really push yourself, and the base pay for them is like 105 with our extra 25%. Then another 20 years of raises, and youre killing it. If you join at 25, your time required goes down. Minimum is 20 years at any age before 57. So if you join at say 31, you can retire at 51.

Dont worry zerodruul , the camaraderie is superb in the patrol. I always refer to the Border Patrol as the Bro Patrol, because at the end of the day it is a brofest. You and the homies playing hide and go seek, and then parking under the port of entry bridge between groups crossing having a peach swisher sweet circle or cigar or Copenhagen circle. On the slow days, you find some very fun stuff to do with the boys.

As far as versus a PD, I have mad respect for locals because I could never deal with the stuff you guys deal with. A year of not dealing with a domestic, a crack head, noise complaint calls, welfare checks with dead bodies melted into the carpet, and things like that, youll be glad you switched. Plus once you are in, the doors are open. I have turned down a few federal jobs I was offered, and just got picked up by the US Marshals. The hiring was federal only, so locals are out right there, and then I got pushed through quickly because of my federal clearance I hold with the fedgovt. I am on the hiring desk for Criminal Investigator for Homeland Security Investigations but will likely turn the call down since I am headed to a dream location for the USMS. Being current fed is a huge leg up and allows you to change agencies freely all over the country and world and keep your retirement.

Haha I have been to all those type of calls and they get tiring after a while. When you get your foot pursuits or vehicle pursuits or subject with a weapon is when the gun rolls in. Ya, definitely need my coppenhagen circke haha. The biggest reason I am making the jump is because like you said, federal opens doors to a lot more possibilities. With my degree I am working on for Information communication Technology I would love to move into a position in intel. The pay is much better which allows for a better lifestyle. Local officer pay does get better once you make Lt or higher but who has 10 years to wait for that to happen when I can make more then they do in 2-3 years coming in as a 9 with BP. I'll take it! Marshalls or DOE chemical transport security would be a great move once I'm with federal. Our Range Master Sergeant worked for DOE and had some great stories. Looking forward to joining green here soon if they can get an academy started ha.

Likely never. That was once and more than likely would only ever happen if the +5000 trump wants actually occurs, and people currently in dont want to go north. Which could be the case, but time will tell

not likely to happen again, unless it's really hard to fill locations like Sault Ste. Marie, MI or Houlton, ME.

The BP is trying to allow Agents who have been on the southern border a chance to job swap to the northern border. Also the number of apps each year in the north just don't match the staffing we have. The action and need for Agents is down south

Sure. Option #1: See person cross border. Arrest said person. Option #2: See sign. Follow sign. See feet. Kick feet. Person looks at your and says, "Quien yo?" You laugh. They laugh. Take a selfie and escort your new friend to the ride.

Yes. You always do what you need to do. Processing could be a different story.

"kick feet' looooooooool truer words never spoken. unless they are face down, and even while kicking feet they assume you cant see them since they cant see you

We are supposed to hire 7000 agents (5k more, and the 2k we are short). So i mean do you want to have seniority over 7000 guys by applying now or be 24989 out of 25000 on the seniority list because you waited

Here's pay. Youre are hired as a GL-5, 7 or 9. Regardless, every year you get a promotion to the next grade. Our promotion ladder is 5 - 7 - 9 - 11 -12. So look at the link below for say a GS-12 and add 25%. Once you are out of the academy and off FTO, you can choose a 8 9 or 10 hour day (x5 work days). Almost everyone does the 10 hour day because it gets you plus 25%. So a GS 12 is making 90K. If you are hired as a GL-9, youre making 90K in two years. Not bad.

I highly recommend you watch Border Wars. Youtube or On Demand it. Show obviously shows highlights, and not the four hours you might be laying in a bush waiting for the drugs to cross, but gives you an idea.

Worry about getting hired before specialty units. That is good advice.for any job, not just BP. If you apply to any agency with specialty units being your only goal, you will likely be let down. I know guys who made BORTAC with two years in, and guys who made K9 handler in 2.5 years in. And conversely, people who have been trying their whole career. All depends on station, sector, and who you are and how your peers view you.

Side note on Border Wars.... there is never air support like on that show. When we did get Omaha they had to 10-3 because the ranchers complained that the cattle were getting scared and running which causes them to lose weight. FML.

The poly was traditionally our speed bump with a 79% fail or declination rate. Now they have a poly pilot that has a 40something percent fail, which is in line with other agencies. Our PT is participation now, and the other steps are no brainers like drug test etc. Good luck to all.
so how long can we expect this new hiring process to take? still 6-12 months? I took the exam early last month. submitted eQip and had my physical earlier this month
