If I were chosing northern, I would go with where I wanted to live, and where I would have the best quality of life. To me this would be the Havre sector. Great hunting in Montana and North Dakota. Less Socialistic politicians and confiscatory tax community, as well. Living in expensive areas without a COLA would also be a factor. You can live like a king in on a BPAs salary in Montana but less so in Buffalo, NY.
Thanks for thoughts....that is what I was thinking too. Being from Alaska, I thought northern MT would be great. I originally applied for the southern border in the last hiring event but had to WD because I couldn't make the oral or I would have lost my job...bad timing. Do you know if I will have to fill out all paperwork again or will that transfer as well?

A note to all of you...this is a great forum and a fantastic source of info. A rare op to get candid answers.

Hey, no problem. Just bring me up for an elk hunt and we'll call it even

If this were one year ago, I would bet a paycheck that it would transfer. Both the NB and SB positions are coordinated by the Minneapolis Hiring Center as they were last year but without a targeted mandate hanging over their heads who knows how agressive they're managing files these days.

You're on! Better yet, we can go up to AK, find a moose and do some salmon fishing.

Thanks for the intel, I will keep posting as to progress....

well, your speculation was correct. I received my packet today and I must fill out EVERYTHING again. O'well....is what it is.

          • I finally got my Tentative Selection Offer in the mail a couple days ago, took about 3.5 months after I took the exam. Good thing I started back payin the tithes.

For people who switched from SW border to northern have you received any info on what northern border new PA's are being assigned to? I chose Detroit, but in my T.O. it just said "northern border station to be determined later" which led me to believe that what ever pops open by the time I get placed in TSU would be my station. Is that how it is or do they actually try to place you where you requested?

Either way I just excited I got a T.O. even though I know its not an official offer it lets me know that Im not forgotten...

            • You will be offered a station somewhere along the NB based on the needs of the service.

              • Thanks madchiken, just as I figured. Its like when the army had us fill out duty station preferences in basic training. You pick Texas and end up in Korea lol

                • I recall this being answered somewhere in this thread before, but I couldn't find it. So, if you don't mind helping me out.....

My medical expired a few days ago and I am retaking the test this coming Tuesday. Any idea how this will effect my waiting game? All other requirements have been completed and I've been in TSU since 4/27. Once I complete the medical again, will I be back to business as usual?

Yes, once your medical is signed off on by the folks at the medical unit, you'll be placed back in TSU. (I even think I read a post on the other forum stating that you even get to keep your TSU seniority, but don't count on it.)

                    • So, most likely, I'll be back at the beginning and have to wait another 90+ days?

                      • Like I mentioned before I just received my T.O. and am currently going through the pre-employment paperwork. Any advice about the forms? All I have left is the finger print form (hopefully I can get the MP's to do that), and the grade requirements sheet. Is there a certain amount of info I need to put on the grade determination worksheet? Any info on problems to avoid would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I submitted the paperwork for the Southern Border last year. My advice would be to follow the directions to the letter. If you screw up, it will only set you back. You could be waiting for months to hear back about what you forgot in the packet. I remember when I mailed the final packet off, it was over 100 pages with all of the duplicate copies, origianal signatures, etc required. Also, give ALL the information they ask for, and explanations if needed. The gov't loves documentation.

Also, if you have questions, I have received excellent service by emailing the applicant link on the website. They usually respond in less than 24 hours. I have had a lot of contact lately because I re-applied for the NB.

                          GOOD LUCK!

                          • Does anyone know if MHC processes everyone for all steps of the process regardless of your status?

I have completed the written test, oral board, medical & fitness and just got scheduled today for a drug test. I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's a good indication that things are moving along well or does everyone get all steps at different times whether things look good or not??

Looks like it takes a few weeks or longer to update the CASS status, I guess time will tell.

                            Thanks.

After the written, everyting else is independent of one another.

Thanks for the reply. So does that mean everyone gets processed eventually? or do they selectively process applicants based on test scores or GEO preferance or any other factors? There just seems to be a HUGE range of timelines on both here and honorfirst, thats why I ask.
