  • Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer

Anyone apply to the forest service law enforcement officer job posting on usajobs? It went up today 2/15/2022, and after it reached 250 applicants the posting closed, at about 10am. Also has anyone out there been through the process?

I must have just squeaked in under the 250. I applied at like 10:15.

I figured it would take a couple days before it reached 250, glad we got our apps in. I wonder how many the expect to fill, since there’s 47 vacancies..

I was thinking the same thing, especially with it being posted under 1801.

Weird to have a cap that low for 46 positions.

There is always a high demand for these positions. Any land management agency really. They also base it on "outreach" interest. Before the positions are even posted they inquire internal and the word gets out there to people outside the agency, who are calling the Patrol Captains and Commanders involved in the hiring process. 42 is by all accounts a "Mass Hiring" as far as Forest LEO positions go.

The posting was cancelled, looks like it will reopen again on the 22nd of this month. As far as I can tell, there won’t be an application cap this time.

Is there an idea on locations that might be offered?

Do 1801 Series USFS LEO’s receive 25% AUO or any other type of premium pay on top of their base salary? I do believe I have seen where BLM LE Rangers receive that or maybe FWS. But again BLM journeyman level is GS 11 if I’m not mistaken too. It’s not LEAP or anything but that extra bit could help out when signing on for GL 5.

I did. Seeing that the last time I put in, it took months to go from received to referred. Could be a while before we hear something…anyone know when the next FLETC class starts up?

I put applications in for all the FS announcements. I'm not holding my breath, but there were some nice locations listed.

I applied for a Forest Service position back in 2020. There were only a couple openings for that particular announcement. I did make it to the interview stage, but sadly did not make final selection for the position. If memory serves it was a GL/GS-09.

This one had more openings than usual, including entry-level. Could be a good opportunity. Stay optimistic!

Got notice of results and referral for the Goverment Employees announcement GL5 announcement.

If you get referred and are willing to do California, you have a great shot.

Now that referrals have gone out, what’s next? If you are chosen for an interview. Has anyone been through this process before. Does the individual FS location contact you, or does Forest Service HQ deal with the rest of the process?

EJ94, its all about the structure of how LEI (Acronym for Forest Service Law Enforcement & Investigations) structure is laid out. The Forest Service is broken down by Regions. For example, Region 5 is all California. With respect to the Law Enforcement Directorate, each Region has a Special Agent in Charge and subordinate supervisors. Every region may have some subtleties on how they allow hiring to pan out, along with the Forest Service HR Center in Albuquerque, NM. Some SAC's (Special Agent in Charge) may offer wide latitude to Patrol Captains on who they want to hire, while others are intrinsically involved (Micro - Management). As a result, its going to vary depending on what locations you were referred to and what locations you may get an interview from.

However, more likely than not a Patrol Captain from whatever location zone you put in for (First Line Supervisor) will reach out to you for the interview process. Each Region is also broken down into LE Zones, which are typically coalesced if you will with a specific National Forest. (i.e. San Bernadino National Forest or Francis Marion National Forest, etc.)
